POSITION SUMMARY:

The Office Based Addiction Treatment (OBAT) team in the Section of General Internal Medicine at Boston Medical Center seeks a highly motivated individual to provide high-skilled clinical education to community health care teams across the state of Massachusetts as part of a large multi-site clinical trial. This position will sit within the Clinical Addiction Research and Education (CARE) Unit, an academic unit at BMC/ Boston University School of Medicine, part of the Grayken Center for Addiction, that conducts research, educates health professionals, provides health care, builds capacity and informs clinical and public health practice and policy to improve the lives of people with unhealthy alcohol and other drug use. The OBAT TTA Clinical Nurse Educator will report to the Director of OBAT TTA, in addition to other senior leadership, including the study Principal Investigator.

BMC provides some of the most sought-after addiction treatment services in the area and is a national leader in addiction treatment, education, research and training. BMC operates the largest opioid treatment program in New England, using a nationally recognized and nationally replicated model. Since 2007, BMC has been funded by the MA Department of Public Health, Bureau of Substance Abuse Services, to provide training and technical assistance (TTA) for the State Technical Assistance Treatment Expansion (STATE) OBAT Program. The goal of the STATE OBAT Program is to expand BMC's collaborative care OBAT model to community health centers (CHCs) and other providers across MA. BMC's OBAT model has proven to be highly effective at improving patient outcomes by expanding access to life-saving medications for addiction. BMC OBAT TTA offers free addiction training across Massachusetts for health care and social service teams to ensure patients across the state have access to the best treatment possible inside their own communities. OBAT TTA uses a range of educational delivery mechanisms including, standardized state and regional trainings, conferences, virtual meetings and trainings and onsite trainings and technical assistance. Training and technical assistance efforts at BMC are rapidly expanding on the local, state and national level including provision of technical assistance to multiple clinical trials utilizing BMC's nurse care manager OBAT model and several addiction-related Project ECHOs.

The OBAT TTA Nurse Clinical Educator will an integral part of the training and technical assistance team, participating in the education of care team members across the state and with some national trainings. Involvement in grant implementation as needed on state and national levels. They will also play a key role in developing educational content, guidelines, protocols and delivery of that content to adults using adult learning theory. Facilitate and support online learning platforms to train, support and disseminate knowledge.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

Clinical Practice
  • In collaboration with the nurse manager and provider partners participates in the assessment, implementation and evaluation of the clinical care and outcomes of specific patient populations at community sites
  • Collaborates with the multidisciplinary team in the development and implementation of patient care policies, procedures, protocols, clinical guidelines, and standards of care.
  • Ensures that clinical nursing staff is prepared to function effectively, efficiently in emergency/crisis situations.
  • Ensures that the nursing staff can demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age groups of patients who are regularly served. Consults appropriate resources when patients outside regularly served age populations are present.
  • In collaboration with the clinical leadership at community OBAT sites, role models professional practice behaviors through assisting with direct patient care, clinical decision making, counseling, and teaching to patients and families with complex or specialized care needs.

Consultation
  • Develops professional relationships within the community through effective networking and professional service that fosters a positive image for the nursing department, OBAT specialty service, and the institution as a whole.
  • Available for nursing consults in areas of specialty for all nursing clinical areas and the organization.
  • Consultant and change agent to community OBAT sites regarding patient population, new procedures, complex patient problems, advanced technology, clinical guidelines, implementation etc.
  • Consultant to professional organizations in areas of specialty promoting a standard of excellence in nursing practice.
  • Ongoing assessment and development of training materials, methods, etc to adapt to changing needs of the addiction field.

Community Education
  • Conducts formal and informal education to staff at sites in the community related to addiction clinical practice guidelines/standards, critical pathways, and quality improvement findings.
  • Conducts trainings individually and with other OBAT TTA staff as needed: basic addictions courses, stigma, special populations, medication for addiction treatment trainings, competency in addictions, waiver implementation, recovery coach, long term care, harm reduction, etc
  • Establishes, leads, and/or participates in appropriate educational forums to provide programs, teaching information, and evaluates and improves programming based on participant evaluation and quantitative measures (e.g., posttest, risk management trends).
  • Develops and delivers specialty education on addiction to nurses, nursing students, physicians and other health care disciplines. Uses multiple venues to meet diverse learner preferences, such as face-to-face, programmed learning, web-based programs.
  • Maintains and updates database of educational programs, staff competencies, etc.
  • Collaborates with the staff of community sites to assess and identify the ongoing learning needs and competence level of nursing staff.
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates outcomes of the training and technical assistance being delivered.
  • Conduct ongoing assessment of patient population/client learning needs.
  • Plans and provides appropriate educational programs to achieve identified patient population/client needs.
  • Evaluates impact of educational sessions on patient care outcomes and/or professional development of staff.
  • Assumes a leadership role in the development, use, and evaluation of patient educational materials.
  • Stimulates clinical inquiry and critical thinking as evidenced by formulation of quality improvement and research utilization projects.
  • Acts as mentor for the OBAT Team, and clinical research unit

Research
  • In collaboration with nursing colleagues utilize evidence to formulate and revise nursing practice standards.
  • Directly/indirectly participate in clinical research in specialty area.
  • Stimulates interest in developing research participation among staff/colleagues.
  • Participates and adheres to study protocols related to implementation of OBAT at community sites
  • Participant in abstract and paper submission related to the work of the team
  • Participate in grant implementation, submissions, evaluation and outcome dissemination.

  • Incorporates translational research into nursing practice and fosters an atmosphere of intellectual curiosity.

    • Evaluating the specialty service's clinical practice in relation to patient/family satisfaction.
    • Participates in committees/task forces and organizational strategic planning committees to define, implement and communicate strategies for improvement.

Professional Development
  • Communicates clinical specialty knowledge through publication, role modeling, and sharing expertise with the professional community.
  • Identifies own learning needs and assumes responsibility for maintaining current knowledge, competency, and expertise in area of specialty.
  • Completes annual mandatory educational requirements, e.g., safety review, infection control standards, departmental/specialty competencies, and maintains appropriate credentialed status.
  • Chairs and /or participates in various nursing and hospital committees, councils, or task force when requested or the need identified.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:
  • Master's degree in Nursing
  • Advanced practice provider preferred

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:
  • Licensed to practice professional nursing as a registered nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts required.
  • Certified in addiction nursing within one year of employment.
  • Waivered to prescribe buprenorphine preferred

EXPERIENCE:
  • At least 7 years providing addictions nursing in clinical settings and 3 or more years providing nursing education
  • Leadership experience with the ability to work autonomously.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support certification required.
  • Demonstrated ability as an effective teacher/mentor.
  • Able to communicate effectively with community health center, hospital employees, and research team members at all levels, including members of the health care team, staff nurses, nursing leadership, and other organizational members.
  • Experience in educational program design, delivery and measurement of learning outcomes.
  • Knowledge of community, and health resources, particularly addiction related resources and supports.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills in a multidisciplinary environment and appropriate to the patient populations served.
  • Self-directed, self-starter and able to implement new programs.
  • Demonstrated ability as an effective leader.
  • Ability to provide education to staff, physician, and auxiliary staff
