Job Description
You will be responsible for setting the digital strategy, product packaging and subsequent pricing, planning and oversight over operations of all current and new revenue generating digital products across all current and future platforms (TED.com, Youtube, Social, Audio, innovative ad units/ packages, custom content etc.). You will be responsible for enabling the team to meet and exceed yearly digital revenue goals.

You will steer the vision for TED’s growing suite of ad products by maintaining, updating and introducing new ad products annually to remain competitive. You will provide guidance to the sales team, providing leadership and oversight of our ideation and development pipeline along with setting the long term ad product and partnership strategy. You will work closely with other internal teams/stakeholders, specifically Media and Tech to develop and deliver on these strategies. Success will be defined by increased digital revenue.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Digital Strategy & Revenue Growth:

  • Analyze and audit our current ad structure and products to determine any changes we should be making to our current product suite.
  • Identify new digital monetization opportunities from industry trends and challenges, and perform market/competitive analysis to inform product decisions and roadmap
  • Set a vision for our ad product strategy, drawing heavily on a strong command of our metrics and goals as well as industry trends
  • Translate business requirements into creative, effective solutions for the future of the advertising business that is mission aligned
  • Be seen as a thought leader inside TED and in the partner community at large
  • Creation and maintenance of all digital revenue models - yr/yr analysis, new product revenue projections, and margin analysis for yearly budgeting process, as well as on an ad hoc basis with the introduction of new innovative digital products.
  • Project, meet and/or exceed aggressive quarterly and annual digital revenue goals
  • Act as the primary driver of all elements of 3rd party ad sales enablement re: deal terms, process, contract negotiation and ongoing management of third-party sales partners once the head of BD shepherds the deal through signing (e.g. PRX, NPR, podcasters, TBD international sales solutions, etc) to ensure most effective strategic collaboration. This is in collaboration with the head of Business Development where all ad sales terms will be dictated by you and any ad sales/revenue related questions/guidance will be managed by you.
  • Provide guidance for all podcast/video talent/host deal terms, setting rules of engagement on revenue expectations, revenue and payment reconciliation supporting the Audio team in the management of those relationships as it pertains to revenue.

Sales Support

  • Create the overall pricing, planning and sales strategies [and related documents] as you develop products that improve utilization across all TED platforms; act as trusted, responsive consultant to sales team and approve pricing, planning, and packaging questions and exceptions on a daily basis
  • Proactively ensure that the sales, media and operations teams are educated on new and innovative strategies and continually inspire teams to raise the bar strategically, creatively and operationally
  • Partner with the marketing team to oversee the creation of all relevant media assets (marketing materials, one sheets, media kits etc) ensuring messaging is relevant to current targets and TED Mission aligned.

Ad Operations Management

  • Oversee all aspects of Ad Operations for Video, Display, and Audio within TED Partnerships team
  • Ensure the efficient, scalable and repeatable digital sales, delivery and post sale process to maximize ad sales. This includes the identification, negotiation and management of some third party providers, in addition to a streamlining of reporting, process, tracking and data management in close collaboration with the digital operations manager/team and tech team.
  • Lead digital operations team consisting of 2 digital operations campaign managers and 2 partnership associates (pre-sales assistants)
  • Oversee ongoing internal research for comscore, Kantar studies, KPI's needed for successful generation, reporting, and renewal of partnerships
  • Manage UIs for Programmatic and provide updated reporting on marketplace dynamics

Qualifications

  • Minimum 10+ years of experience in ad sales and/or digital ad strategy (with specific experience managing video and podcast sales or sales structures)
  • Digital experience required; Video, Audio, Social, Programmatic
  • Experience negotiating third party ad sales agreements or ad repping agreements
  • Proven excellence in managing and mentoring a team with empathy and respect
  • Creative problem solving skills and a willingness to challenge the norm to improve product offerings and drive incremental revenue. A strong bias toward action and can break down complex problems into steps that drive product development
  • Excellent influencing skills and a proven collaborator; ability to work successfully with both direct and indirect teams across the organization, while balancing the tenuous balance of revenues and the integrity of a non-profit organization.
  • A strong command of the ad technology landscape and its role in the broader advertising and marketing ecosystem
  • Strong presentation and communication skills
  • Empathy and respect for TED’s mission and the balance between commercial interests and our non-profit mission.
  • Fluency in digital media and digital ad models

Salary range: $150,000-$185,000 + commission
