Staff Veterinarian - Veterinary Pathologist, DLAR Job at Duke University
Job Summary
In the role of Veterinary Pathologist, manage the goals and direction of diagnostic efforts to support the Duke-wide research portfolio, research animal diagnostics and pathology, animal model development, and independent or collaborative research initiatives.

As a safeguard for the employee and the animals, Veterinarians may be subject to vaccines, tests, and physical examinations prior to working with specific animals or animal populations as required by research needs, including, but not limited to:
- TB testing and clearance;
- Hepatitis B (proof of immunization and/or vaccination);
- Rabies (proof of immunization and/or vaccination);
- Tetanus (current vaccination less than 10 years);
- Measles (proof of immunization and/or vaccination);
- Periodic physical examinations including respiratory fit tests);
- Other vaccines or testing as required by EOHW standards.
Hazard Exposure
The animal facility has a variety of environmental conditions. Specifically, employees may be exposed to potentially hazardous noise, dust, chemicals, extreme heat, and animal waste products. The duration of exposure to any of the above is dependent on assigned duties. Some aspects of this position may expose the incumbent to potentially zoonotic and other biohazardous agents. Appropriate protective clothing and equipment may be required and will be provided when required, accompanied by appropriate training.
Work Performed
- Provide diagnostic pathology support for the Duke animal program, including actively participating and directing the activities of employees providing necropsy and histopathology support. Interpret results, advise laboratory staff on appropriate testing, and communicate with Duke research partners.
- Provide management and direction for the DLAR technical staff on the veterinary diagnostic and pathology teams.
- Collaborate with Duke investigators to provide pathology expertise and support.
- Assist in the preparation of researchers’ grants with the pathology of research animals.
- Prepare and maintain a variety of records and operational reports concerning consultations and diagnostic decisions ensuring compliance with applicable Federal, State, and local regulations.
- Keep abreast of new technological advances in veterinary diagnostics and provide in-service training and orientation programs to staff and other research personnel.
- Assist in effective quality control systems and preventive health programs, and revise techniques and procedures as required to obtain desired standards.
- Perform other related duties as required incidental to the work described herein.

Preferences
Certification by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine. A Master of Science or Ph.D. in a science-related field is also preferred.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
Work requires completion of an accredited Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program or a certificate of equivalent training accepted by the AVMA. Licensure to practice veterinary medicine in a state or territory of the United States is also required.
Experience
Three years of experience in laboratory animal medicine or completion OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE of a training program in Laboratory Animal Medicine with eligibilityfor certification in this field may be substituted for the three year experience requirement noted above.
