General Description

The primary responsibility of the Senior Chemist is the research and development of new tests or techniques following Federal, State and Local regulations. An employee of this class is responsible for conducting research, making work assignments, and reviewing test results. Provide training and guidance to Chemist II and Chemist I for all new testing and lab operations. Maintain Lab Schedule of Calibrations and Certifications. Manage the Lab’s workorder system. Offers support to management with budgeting and evaluations. Performs routine and specialized tests on Toho Water Authority’s wastewater and drinking water. Responsible for chemical and microbiological testing and analyses according to established principles and techniques. This includes receiving and preparing samples, assessing testing data and entering results into LIMS system, conducting maintenance on lab instruments and equipment, and completing work orders. Other duties include office work such as ordering and receiving supplies, managing various paperwork and documents, maintaining purchasing records. This position reports to the Laboratory Manager.

Essential Functions

  • Work on Method Development for new tests, procedure or techniques in support to operational needs. This individual is responsible for the coordination and execution of new equipment and new methods in accordance with regulatory requirements as well the determination and validation of limit of detection, limit of quantitation, linearity, accuracy, range and precision.
  • Creation of technical documentation in support of method development activities such as Standard Operating Procedures, preparation of worksheets, and deviation reports for review by the Laboratory Manager.
  • Provide technical support in optimization of current analytical methods to support process development.
  • Recommend capital improvements such as new instrumentation or equipment; assists in preparing operation and maintenance budgets for the section; and may occasionally be assigned to other duties for training purposes or to meet technological changes or unexpected emergencies.
  • Coordinate Lab activities. Assign tests to the Chemists to ensure the work is evenly distributed, holding times are met and sample testing is completed before the deadline for reporting. Provide support to management by writing and/or editing SOP’s.
  • Provide meaningful direction, guidance and support to help employees achieve their professional goals. Identify specific milestones that are needed for career growth. Identify areas for improvement and initiate an action plan to maximize employee’s efficiency.
  • Work with the Quality Assurance on Implementation of Corrective Actions and evaluation of Root Cause Analysis.
  • Assist in maintaining NELAC Laboratory Accreditation by participating in internal and external assessments.
  • Conduct advanced testing. Perform and supervise routine tests on Toho Water Authority’s wastewater and drinking water such as: BOD, CBOD, pH, Conductivity, Chlorine, NO2/NO3, TSS, TS%, VSS, , COD, Fecal MF, Colilert/Colilert-18, HPC, Fecal MPN, Student T and E-Coli Quanti-Tray, Tot Col MF, NH3, Chloride, Ortho P, VS, Fecal MPN, Turbidity, TDS, TP, TKN and NH3.
  • Assess testing data and enter reported results in LIMS system. Be able to calculate results by using mathematical formulas including advanced calculations and practical algebra. Communicate with supervisors, co-workers, and other departments and employees.
  • Assist in the sample receipt area as needed. Ensure that all Chain of Custody forms are filled out correctly by sample collectors. Review volume, integrity and measure temperatures of sample bottles upon receiving.
  • Operate laboratory equipment, including spectrophotometers, microscopes, meters, autoclave, balances, oven, furnace, BOD auto analyzer, discrete analyzer, digestion block, and other laboratory instruments and supplies. Perform preliminary troubleshooting, calibration and preventive maintenance of lab equipment and instruments. Complete repairs when necessary. Enter maintenance and work order completion records into Infor EAM. Maintain Lab Calibrations and Certifications.
  • Maintain storage of all required records, log books, and files such as test bench sheets, Chain of Custody, reagent prep sheets, purchasing records and equipment files in file cabinet. Organize lab records according to record series for long-term storage in archive room. Scan and enter archived records into Laserfiche.
  • Place orders and receive chemicals and supplies. Maintain chemical and supply inventory in LIMS, including receiving current Certificates of Analysis and Safety Data Sheets for each chemical. Manage Purchasing Card account records and invoices for orders.
  • Operate various office equipment including computer, scanner/printer/copier, calculator and telephone; perform office duties such as sending/receiving email, answering telephone, scanning and faxing documents, and answering door for vendors and visitors.
  • Participate in recommended training and classes such as: CPR/First Aid class, relevant computer software classes, Records Management training, User Group meetings for lab instruments, etc.
  • Assist during the interview process to select new employees.
  • Conducts all activities in a safe and efficient manner by adhering to Data Integrity and Laboratory Ethics requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

1.Requires a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science/Technology, Biology, Chemistry or related field.
2.Supplemented by 5 years of experience in chemical and microbiological analyses. Good knowledge of chemical laboratory procedures, techniques, and modern instrumentation; a good knowledge of safety principles and practices. The successful candidate must have strong analytical skills, be able to work on multiple projects and meet established timelines.
3. Experience with NELAC Laboratory Accreditation.
4. Knowledge of Standard Methods, EPA Methods and the protocols for the implementation of new methods.
5. Must have excellent computer skills, be able to multitask and good with customer service. Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Driver’s License as required.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Environmental factors include outdoor conditions; rugged terrain, slippery surfaces, varying weather, including, heat, cold, dry, wet weather. Environmental factors include indoor, flat surface, noise, sitting with occasionally walking and standing.
