The Resident Caretaker is a key member of the Friends of Glen Gray Operations Team providing year-round onsite management and maintenance of Camp Glen Gray, Mahwah, NJ facilities and property. Camp Glen Gray is a Bergen County Park weekend campground operated by the Friends of Glen Gray. The part time position is an employee of the Friends of Glen Gray and reports to the Camp Operations Manager. The position has a high degree of visibility and interface with the customer base.

The successful candidate will be recently retired with access to benefits or has a job with benefits that permits work from home.

This position is responsible for the security and maintenance of the property and ensuring a safe, clean environment for campers and will supervise and organize those volunteers who help support maintenance, improvements, and weekend operations.

The position requires residence in on-site housing provided by the Friends of Glen Gray and 15 hours per week in execution of oart time operational responsibilities as part of the compensation which consists of market rent and utilities in the two bedroom home on premise . Camp vehicles are provided for business use purposes.

The job requires the Resident Caretaker to be “on call in close proximity” on weekends from Friday evening (6PM) through Sunday mornings (12PM). This includes being available for the trucking of camper gear from the parking lot to/from campsites on Friday evenings (6-9PM), Saturday and Sunday mornings (8-11AM).

Volunteer Campmasters manage the office and handle routine camper interaction during weekends under the supervision of the Operations Manager and coordination with the Resident Caretaker. Weekday on-call hours may be required if the camp is rented for summer use.

Additional hours may be required subject to approval. The camp is closed on major holidays.

Key responsibilities:

Under the direct supervision of the Operations Manager, the Resident Caretaker supports camp operations through:

  • Monitoring the security of the camp, managing access and coordinating with emergency responders as required.
  • General maintenance of camp premises, buildings and campsites and responding to emergency situations as required.
  • Cleaning buildings and restrooms after weekend use.
  • Ongoing lake water sampling for delivery to Bergen County Parks for testing
  • Mowing lawns, trimming brush and clearing debris, fallen trees, etc.
  • Maintaining gravel roads throughout the property.
  • Maintenance of camp facilities and assets in a secure and organized manner
  • Maintenance and repair of camp vehicles.
  • Make regular inspections of the facilities and property to determine essential repairs and corrective actions required.
  • Participating in planning and execution of camp improvement projects.
  • Implementing and enforcing safety and health policies of Bergen County and the operating policies of the Friends of Glen Gray.
  • Trucking of camper gear from the parking lot to/from campsites as needed on Friday evenings and Sunday mornings .
  • Salting and plowing the camp parking lot and access road in the winter.
  • Provision of excellent customer service to all internal and external stakeholders who utilize the property.
  • Comply with established Friends of Glen Gray business and operating procedures
  • Interface with Bergen County personnel as directed by the Operations Manager with regards to responsibilities outlined in the Management Agreement
  • Submit regular progress reports and maintain essential business records
  • Maintain harmonious relationships with the operations team, volunteers, government services and adjoining landowners
  • Pick-up camp mail and advise manager of priority items
  • Maintain relationships with local vendors
  • Support and assist with Camp program and activities as requested

Compensation

Living onsite in the semi-furnished caretaker’s residence (a two-bedroom house) and utilities (electric, gas, telephone and internet) valued at $3,000 per month. Camp vehicles are provided for business use purposes.

15 hours of work per week at the rate of $25 per hour which occurs primarily on weekends.

Three weeks of time off to be scheduled with advance approval will be available.

Additional hours (with advance approval) will be compensated at the hourly rate of $25,

Qualifications:

  • High school degree or GED equivalent.
  • Mature adult 25 years of age or older
  • Strong time and project management skills with the ability to plan personal time and schedule work
  • Ability to work as part of a diverse team comprised of Management, staff and volunteers
  • Satisfactory completion of standard background and reference checks.
  • NJ Driver’s license with a clean driving record and ability to be insurable on the Camp’s insurance policies.
  • Physically fit with the ability to routinely move and lift equipment and materials up to 80 pounds
  • Three to five years’ experience in property maintenance such as general contractor, school custodian, apartment superintendent, public works, or parks department employee
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to be able to communicate with others clearly
  • General knowledge of carpentry, plumbing and electrical systems maintenance and repair, including related power tool usage
  • Ability to use and maintain landscaping equipment.
  • Ability to drive trucks (pick-up, utility, and dump trucks with trailers) on unpaved camp roads and operate snowplows and salters.
  • Ability to obtain requisite health department licenses (food manager) to support kitchen usage as required.
  • Computer literacy (including email correspondence, MS Word and Excel or Google
  • Sheets and Google Drive) is required for proficiency in communication, property management/maintenance and reporting.
  • Experience in Scouting as a volunteer or professional is a plus.
