Oregon Zoo is seeking a program impact manager with an enthusiasm for data analysis, evaluating educational programs and increasing staff’s capacity to create embedded assessments into programs to monitor measurable outcomes. This role will collaborate with stakeholders to evaluate our exhibit experiences. The successful candidate will report to and work in partnership with the education team as well as collaborate with various zoo department stakeholders.
Work may include developing evaluation plans for educational programming, front-end, formative, and summative evaluation of zoo exhibits, and building a culture of evaluation-based decision-making within the education department. This role will facilitate a process to develop a program outcome framework for the education department as well as design an evaluation plan process. Designs and administers surveys and other unique qualitative data collection instruments; collects and analyzes data both quantitative and qualitative; and prepares narratives and statistical reports to share findings with various stakeholders including internal staff, donors, Oregon Zoo Foundation, and the community. Trains paid data collectors as well as teens and volunteers to assist with data collection.
As the Program Impact Manager you will:
- Design strategies and provide support for data utilization to inform program management, program improvement, and to report on organizational and departmental outcomes while maintaining ethical data practices.
- Manages evaluation projects from start to finish, including budget creation and management, maintaining timelines, developing project roles, reporting to stakeholders and funders on progress and assessing project success.
- Create a process to build evaluation capacity within the education department staff.
- Conduct literature reviews and background research in support of zoo initiatives.
- Train data collectors including volunteers, youth, and staff to support evaluation plans.
- Provides oversight and development of evaluation plans and priorities.
- Current evaluations that have been set as a priority for the zoo.
- Priority #1 Facilitate a process to create a program outcome framework for all educational programming.
- Priority #2 Build the capacity for education staff to understand the basics in program evaluation.
- Priority #3 Conduct a study on our guest’s perceptions of wildlife conservation
- Priority #4 Front-end evaluation to support the development of a new school partnership program.
- Coordinate and conduct meeting share outs of evaluation findings to a variety of audiences.
- Collaborates with other zoo departments to develop evaluation plans for grant applications.
- Works in collaboration with education director to develop an annual budget to support yearly evaluation program plans.
- Provides a liaison role to hired evaluation consultants.

Minimum qualifications:
- Four years of experience in a similar position example of this work would include:
- Conducting social science research and evaluation studies.
- Leading the design and/or implementation of “assess-plan-act" frameworks for effective, mission-aligned programming; and
- A Bachelor’s Degree in applicable area of study; Master’s preferred; or
- Any combination of education and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the classification duties and responsibilities
Required: The candidate selected for the position will need to become registered with the State of Oregon’s Child Care Registry prior to being hired. Criminal convictions do not necessarily preclude employment and will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
Working environment – this position is flexible with both office and telework options. We would consider this to be a hybrid model, with the office work being able to be completed from a home office. Some weekends and evening work will be available, based on the need of the data to be collected.

Preferred qualifications:
You do not need to have the following preferred qualifications/transferable skills to qualify. However, keep in mind we may consider some or all of the following when identifying the most qualified candidates. Your transferable skills are any skills you have gained through education, work experience, including the military, or life experience that are relevant for this position.
- Advanced degree in a relevant field such as social sciences, education, biological sciences, museum studies, and/or related area
- Formal coursework in evaluation and/or research methodology
- Experience at an AZA accredited facility
- Ability to teach others on evaluation principles who have little to no experience with the concepts.
- Has unique and creative ideas for sharing evaluation findings to a variety of audiences.
COMPENSATION AND REPRESENTATION
Based on the Oregon Pay Equity Act requirements, Metro’s internal equity review process, and the candidates’ qualifications, the appointment will typically be made between $100,000 to $108,160.00 annually. The full-salary range for this position is $84,739.20 to $113,568 annually.
