Seasonal Position
Position Details:
- A great position for anyone looking for summer work to gain experience toward a degree or certification plant, turf & landscape management, natural sciences, horticulture or arboriculture
- Position runs approximately from April - September, flexibility in start date
- Seasonal role
- Approximately 40 hours per week
- Monday – Friday 7am – 3:30 pm
Opportunity:
The Horticulture & Collections department seeks a seasonal worker to support the buildings and grounds at the Holden Arboretum. The Horticulture & Collections seasonal will mow a variety of landscapes including meadows, fields, brush, research collections, verges, lawns and fine turf using a series of specialized equipment including tractors and, zero-turn mowers. The Collections seasonal will also work throughout the grounds which includes trail maintenance. This role will apply attention to detail and a professional attitude to presentation and care of our natural environment. We are seeking a person with mechanical aptitude who will present a positive attitude that leads to successful teamwork and is results driven. Key Responsibilities:
- Support Holden Forests & Gardens’ mission vision, values, and core commitment
- Operate power equipment to maintain turf and meadows in core and natural areas in excellent horticultural condition
- Mowing
- Hauling brush and raking
- String trimming
- Use of hand pruners, loppers, hand saws and backpack sprayers
- Pest control
- Book, check-in and out equipment and daily maintenance tasks
- Communicates across various departments as needed
- Records activities
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications and Skills:
- Demonstrate a passion for people and nature
- High school diploma or equivalent or provide a Minor Work Permit if required
- Experience working in the natural sciences, horticulture or arboriculture, preferred
- Willing and able to operate small power equipment, required
- A desire to work outdoors performing manual labor in all weather conditions
- Willingness to receive training for pesticide application certification
- Experience of tractor mowing and/or fine turf mowing and/or weed whip is a plus
- Experience in the operation of stick shift vehicles and other machinery such as chippers, weed eaters, sprayers, pickup trucks a plus
- Effectively work and communicate within a team
- Able to work independently
- A positive attitude, willingness to learn
- Valid driver's license and an acceptable vehicle record
- Must pass a criminal background check
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to perform with or without reasonable accommodation:
- Willing and able to operate small power equipment and perform strenuous, hands-on work year-round in all types of weather conditions
- Working outdoors or indoors where the ambient temperature spans 30-100 degrees Fahrenheit
- Transporting oneself by foot over a variety of terrain that may be wet, slippery, uneven and/or rocky
- Ability to safely operate small-engine machinery equipment including utility vehicle, sprayers, and blowers or a willingness to learn
- Standing, bending, kneeling, climbing, reaching, pulling, pushing, sitting, grabbing and lifting
- Occasionally lifting and carrying of up to 50 lbs.
