Sappi Somerset is among the largest paper mills in North America, producing over 970,000 metric tons of graphics and board paper and 530,000 metric tons of pulp each year. The mill began as a greenfield pulp mill in 1976, supplying fiber for Scott paper tissue mills. The first of three state-of-the-art coated paper machines was installed in 1982, with subsequent machines installed in 1986 and 1990. Significant reinvestments over the years has maintained Somerset's edge on technology and also to branch out from traditional graphic paper into SBS board grades with the rebuild of PM1 in 2018. The mill can also produce market pulp based on fiber balance, and continues to push for world class status in the realms of safety, quality, and productivity.

Overview:
Sappi North America (Sappi) is looking for the next key member of its financial accounting team at the Sappi Somerset Mill. This candidate will play a significant role in the finance teams’ delivery of financial and cost accounting services, financial analysis, reporting and financial planning functions and business decision support for the Sappi Somerset Mill. It is our expectation that this candidate has demonstrated capabilities to partner with other members of Sappi Somerset Mill finance and mill operations to enhance the financial and decision-making capabilities and to improve financial processes at the manufacturing site. The position reports to the Somerset mill controller and the candidate will have core responsibilities in mill production and cost accounting, variance analysis and financial reporting, period-end financial closings, preparation of annual budget and periodic forecasts and operational improvement projects.
Accountabilities:
- Accounting- Provide financial and cost accounting services for the mill site including product costing, inventory control and valuation, analysis and support for capital investment programs. Responsible for critical aspects of the month-end closing process as well as financial and operations reporting. These include completion of reconciliations, calculations, journal entries, and other summaries of performance.
- Financial Analysis- Assess, develop and present the necessary financial information and associated analyses of manufacturing productivity, product cost and financial performance that are timely and accurate. Effectively evaluate actual results vs. budget and forecast, year-to-year trends, and assesses future implications.
- Business Decision Support- Working with other members of the Sappi Somerset Mill finance team, develop appropriate analysis, reporting and financial modeling of key drivers and financial levers to provide business decision support to mill management. Analyze opportunities to maximize value creation (profit, working capital, return on assets and productivity).
- Budgeting and Planning- Participate in the preparation of Sappi Somerset Mill annual financial budget, periodic financial forecasts and financial estimates which includes development of product standard costs, budgetary and forecast metrics and other cost accounting processes and activities needed to measure and evaluate mill performance.
- Process Improvement- Identify opportunities and actions required for continuous process improvements in finance and accounting activities and business processes.
- Control Framework- Support mill site’s efforts to ensure business procedures and financial practices are in compliance with Sappi’s system of internal controls and corporate policies; act as financial resource to other mill operational functions to ensure consistent application, documentation and implementation of control objectives.
- Other- Design and lead special projects and other assigned activities as directed by mill and finance management.
Required skills and abilities:
- Ability to work within matrixed, cross functional teams to assess financial results on business initiatives.
- Demonstrated critical thinking and analytical capabilities including extensive managerial and cost accounting skills and costing processes, budget planning and forecasting; a sound knowledge of financial accounting concepts and principles.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills needed. Strong analytical skills and ability to create concise, easy to understand information from large volumes of system transactions.
- Clear understanding of the capabilities of integrated information systems (SAP) and database structures to drive efficiencies and improvements in the availability and use of financial information.
- Proficient use of Microsoft Office Suite of products and other database management tools.
- Excellent team player with a high level of self-management and motivation to identify opportunities to improve the systems, structures and processes used in the financial area.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple and competing priorities.
- A strong sense of urgency and drive for results.
Salary is determined by a number of factors including the value of the job to the organization, market forces, internal equity and skills brought to the job.
