This position may be filled with a six month to one year in-training plan from Ferry Operator Assistant to the goal class of Ferry Operator.
Correctional Industries (CI) within the Department of Corrections (DOC) is seeking highly motivated and qualified individuals for current and future on-call or permanent Fe rry Operator/Senior Deckhand and Ferry Operator Assistant positions. These positions are located at McNeil Island Stewardship in Steilacoom, WA.
Ferry Operator

"An on-call appointment is where the work is intermittent in nature, is sporadic and does not fit a particular pattern. The work hours for this job may be days, evenings, nights and weekends including holidays."
Our current on-call staff have the opportunity to work an average of 32-40 hours per week, although the positions have no minimum hour guarantee. These on-call positions are provided with a benefits package including medical, dental, vision and retirement as well as paid sick leave, holiday pay and paid vacation; provided they work at least 20 hours or more each week

As a Ferry Operator or Ferry Operator Assistant in Training some of your duties will include:
Serves as Senior Deckhand and Engineer on inspected passenger vessels up to 100 tons and certified for 149-passengers or more..- Responsible for loading ramps and directing assists deckhands assigned with vessel maintenance, cleanliness, mooring and unmooring of lines.
- Under the direction of the Master, operates the vessel and navigational and communication equipment such as radar, automatic identification systems, radios.
- Conducts safety briefings to passengers; Assists in the startup and shut down of engines, generators and conducts check of engines, reduction gears, auxiliary equipment and emergency equipment at start of shift or during the first hour of shift and again during shift, and end of shift, adding fluids to engines and other equipment as necessary. Conducts security checks of vessel at each docking prior to allowing passengers to board.
- After completion of your in-training program as Ferry Operator Assistant, or as a Ferry Operator, you can assist the Master in the operation of the vessel and will be able to operate the vessel in the event of an emergency or should the Master become incapacitated.
What We Need (Required Qualifications)
Education
- High School Graduate or GED certificate
One (1) year verifiable experience in the marine industry as deck or engine crew- A valid Transportation Workers Identification Card (TWIC) or the ability to obtain a TWIC within thirty (30) days of employment
- Possess and maintain a valid WA State driver's license
Ferry Operator Assistant
- High School Graduate or GED certificate
One (1) year of paid work experience in a trade or mechanical occupation. (Example; diesel engine repair, marine shipyard tradesmen, commercial fishing, building construction.)- A valid Transportation Workers Identification Card (TWIC) or the ability to obtain a TWIC within thirty (30) days of employment
- Possess and maintain a valid WA State driver's license
What Will Make Your Application Stand Out (Preferred Qualifications)
- One (1) year experience working on vessels of at least fifty (50) tons in either the engine department or deck department.
- Valid First Aid/CPR certification.
- Familiar with seamanship duties, line handling, docking/unloading procedures, and basic navigation skills.
- Knowledge of emergency procedures for passenger vessels (man overboard, fire and abandon ship).
- Knowledge of operation of navigational equipment, engine alarms/indicators, control gauges, steering systems, and communication procedures.
- Knowledge of main and auxiliary machinery, steering systems, refueling techniques.
- Ability to learn and operate single and multi-engine vessels.
- Ability to take charge during emergencies and direct passengers.
- Ability to lead crew performing vessel clean up and maintenance.
- Ability to lead crew performing dock maintenance and repairs.
- Ability to use good judgment while keeping passenger and vessel safety as an utmost concern.
Ferry Operator Assistant
- Familiar with seamanship duties, line handling, docking/unloading procedures, and basic navigation skills.
- Knowledge of emergency procedures for passenger vessels.
- Knowledge of main and auxiliary machinery, steering systems, refueling techniques.
- Ability to take charge during emergencies and direct passengers.
- Ability to supervise offenders performing vessel clean up and maintenance.
- Ability to use good judgement while keeping passenger and vessel safety as an utmost concern.
Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:
- Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
- Complete a felony disclosure form prior to employment and submit to a criminal background check
- Successfully complete, within mandated timeframes, employee orientation and all other mandatory annual, in-service and other required training.
- Provide physical residential address and home telephone number to the Department of Corrections.
- Become familiar and comply with all DOC policies and procedures and Collective Bargaining Agreements as applicable.
- Submit to drug testing in accordance with CBA and agency policy.
- Report for duty on short notice for a specific timeframe.
- Report to duty outside of normally scheduled work hours and workdays.
- Report to a duty station that is different from the official duty station.
- Perform work tasks outside the normal scope of duties reflect.
Evaluations of knowledge, skills and abilities of the incumbent will be conducted at six and 12 months during the Ferry Operator Assistant level. At the end of the 12-month in-training plan, the Ferry Operator Assistant will progress to a Ferry Operator and will serve a six-month trial service. During the trial service period, the incumbent will be evaluated at four months for performance to ensure appropriate skill level, knowledge and abilities are demonstrated.
