Occupational Summary:

The Dean of Students supervises the Residence Life, Student Activities, and Multicultural Affairs areas and coordinates judicial, assessment, orientation, and leadership training initiatives. The Dean reports to the VP of Enrollment Management and Student Success and serves on the Deans Council with the other academic deans to formulate university-wide policies for academic and student affairs. The Dean serves as a role model for the students by exhibiting ethical and professional conduct.


Position is full time (40hrs) and works 12 months per year. Paid time off and benefits starting after first 30 days. Approximately 20 days off with pay for observed holidays/breaks with an additional 2 weeks of vacation time accrued per year. Tuition waiver for employee, spouse and eligible dependents after one year of employment.

This position is responsible for cultivating and maintaining the institution's Catholic identity and its mission to empower graduates to transform society. As a member of the Newman community, the staff member will join with the institution's sponsors, the Adorers of the Blood of Christ (ASC Sisters), to witness God's love in Mission to empower others, foster oneness, celebrate life, form right relationships, and walk as compassionate companions. Additionally, this position contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other faiths, cultures, or backgrounds.


Management Duties:

  • Manage and oversee the personnel and programming for Student Activities, Multicultural Engagement, and Residence Life.
  • Oversee the discipline processes on campus and serve as co-judicial officer; help train faculty, staff, and students to be part of the judicial process.
  • Supervise and contribute to campus diversity initiatives.
  • Manage and oversee Student Affairs budgets.
  • Oversee compliance with immunization requirements for residential students.


Collaboration Duties:

  • Work with Student Affairs staff to develop programs and activities to energize our campus and our students.
  • Develop and implement program planning guides for all activities that Student Affairs/Student Life sponsors.
  • Serve as advisor to the Student Government Association, attending SGA meetings and meeting regularly one-on-one with the SGA President.
  • Develop an assessment plan for co-curricular activities.
  • Chair the Orientation Planning Committee (OPC). Manage budget and coordinate all orientation activities including hiring, training and supervising orientation assistants, and directing all orientation volunteers for both the Fall and Spring Orientation events.
  • Serve on the Retention Committee and the Commencement Committee.
  • Coordinate Virtual Care Group advertising for student counseling services.
  • Contribute to the student success initiatives through Credo's Moving the Needle project.
  • Work with Residence Life to develop Intramural plans and schedule.
  • Collaborate with faculty to contribute to the quality of the academic and co-curricular experience.
  • Collaborate with the Title IX coordinator to ensure compliance with Title IX/Sexual Assault training requirements with students.
  • Contribute to the strategic planning process, translating the goals for Student Affairs to others in meaningful terms.
  • Work with Academic Affairs to revise sections in the student handbook.
  • Work with the necessary departments to bring the Student Affairs, Student Life, Residence Life and Student Clubs/Organizations web pages up to date on Newman University Website.
  • Support student events by attendance and participation.
  • Serve as a recruitment, retention, and graduation specialist.
  • Complete University-required trainings.
  • Contribute to the overall success of the Student Affairs by performing all other duties as assigned and appropriate to the position.


Required Qualifications/Education/Experience/Skills/Training:

  • Master's degree in higher education, college student personnel or related area
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Ability to be tactful and flexible
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills; ability to get along well with diverse personalities; team player.
  • Ability to handle confidential information in a discreet manner.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.


Preferred Qualifications/Education/Experience/Skills/Training:

  • 3-5 years related experience
  • Proven track record of leadership in Student Affairs and experience directing professional staff members
