JOB SUMMARY

The Certified Ophthalmic Technician performs a range of duties which includes preparing the patient to see the attending Ophthalmologists and Optometrists (preliminary exam, medical history, & testing), preparation of examination and treatment rooms, applying aseptic techniques, performing basic and routine vision screening examinations, administering eye medications, cleaning and maintaining ophthalmic instruments, assisting physicians during minor surgical and laser procedures, and instructing patients in care and use of corrective lenses.
The certified ophthalmic technician will help supervise the effective use of medical assistance during clinic hours; maintain electronic medical records; keep inventory of general clinic supplies such as medications, and patient educational items; keep rooms organized and work alongside Supervisor with medication dispensing for those patients who qualify.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
· Provides primary ophthalmic care to patients and acts as clinical assistant to physician.
· Assists physicians in performing ophthalmic procedures, including surgery.
· Performs complete ophthalmic history and preliminary exams, sub-specialty tests such as refraction, Visual Field, Fundus and OCT.
· Checks condition of patients' eyes by observing pupils, muscle, visual acuity, extraocular movements, and blood pressure when necessary.
· Verifies patient information by interviewing patient, recording medical history, and confirming purpose of visit. Accurately records all information in EMR system according to established standards and clinic requirements.
· Prepares patients for ophthalmology examination by dilating pupils, changes in visual acuity, elevated extraocular pressure, or blood pressure and communicating results to attending Physician.
· Advises patients by communicating physician's orders, use of drops, medications, and answer questions about services and eye conditions.
· Secures patient information and maintains patient confidence by completing and safeguarding medical records, completing diagnostic and procedure coding, and keeping patient information confidential, to include scribing as needed.
· Under the direction of the Supervisor, maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by establishing and following protocols, standards and procedures along with complying with legal regulations, ensuring compliance with HIPPA requirements and patient confidentiality guidelines.
· Maintain a quality patient experience.
· Maintains, cleans and sterilizes ophthalmic and surgical instruments, equipment and facilities.
· Call patients to inquire about their post-operative status or recovery.
· Cultivate a good rapport with physicians, staff and volunteers.
· Ensure technology needed to support medical equipment and records operates effectively and communicate with Supervisor should any replacement is needed.
· Keep inventory of general clinic supplies up to date and provide Supervisor orders on a biweekly basis.
· Work alongside Supervisor to develop educational materials for medical team and training as requested. Develop educational materials for patients.
· Participate in outreach activities when requested.
· Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
· Ophthalmology Experience: 2 years (Required)
· Spanish (Required) to communicate with patients
· Strong knowledge of Ophthalmologists and Optometrists medical office procedures.
· Certified Ophthalmic Technician (Preferred)
· Authorized to work in the US
· Basic computer skills in relevant software applications to include: MS-word, MS-Excel; Electronic patient records experience preferred.
· Ability to work independently on assigned tasks as well as to accept direction on given assignments.
· Deals with confidential information and/or issues using discretion and judgment.
· Must have high energy, passion, patience for their work and a team player who can effectively interact with all clinic staff, volunteers and patients.
· Ability to identify problems and propose solutions.
WORK ENVIROMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
· Work is performed in a medical office setting.
· Physical demands of position: must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time, must have manual dexterity to work with ophthalmic equipment and maneuver a patient if in a wheelchair, must be able to accurately type information into EMR system, and must be able to have face to face conversation with patients and staff.

Pay: $22.00 - $28.00 per hour
