Responsibilities:

Under general supervision, the Bus Driver operates medium and heavy-duty commercial passenger vehicles, transporting passengers to various locations and ensuring the safety of all passengers. The position ensures the operational readiness of equipment and performs basic maintenance service activities and must be able to facilitate a high-level of customer service, respond to road hazards, incidents, traffic congestions, alternate routing and keep the managers/leads informed of operational developments. The incumbent will work with all managers and leads to further the goals of the department and the Division of Student Affairs. The incumbent must be able to comprehend complex route and mapping instructions that factor in construction and traffic patterns. This position requires the incumbent to maintain a flexible schedule that can include weekdays, nights, and weekends.

Specific duties include:

  • Operate medium and heavy-duty commercial passenger vehicles
  • Transport passengers to various locations in and out of state
  • Provide a rider experience that reflects UMBC mission and values
  • Verify rider credentials to ensure UMBC community safety at large
  • Ensure passenger safety by adhering to Transit and DOT safety standards
  • Perform vehicle pre-/post-trip inspections and report all deficiencies
  • Ensure operational readiness of all equipment (vehicle, scanners, etc.)
  • Serve as resource for students, student staff, and new driver staff

Required Minimum Qualifications:

One year of experience as a driver.

Must have a Maryland Commercial Class B Driver’s License with Air Brake and Passenger Endorsement as well as a DOT medical card.

Ability to work flexible hours to meet the needs of the operation (days, nights, weekends) - some overnights on charter if necessary.



Preferred Qualifications:

Transit/transportation industry experience is highly preferred. Must have excellent communication skills (written and verbal). Excellent time management skills with the ability to prioritize.

Pay Range 07 (Starting at $16.77/hour up to $20/hour) based on the University System of Maryland Pay Program
