Job Description
The West Chester, Pennsylvania office of Commonwealth Heritage Group is seeking applicants for a full-time temporary or
permanent Archaeologist V (Field Director) to manage and direct field projects out of Commonwealth’s West Chester,
Pennsylvania location. Primary responsibilities will include: leading and supervising field staff; recording archaeological sites
through survey; intensive excavations for site evaluations; monitoring fieldwork quality and reviewing paperwork/notes;
conducting background research require for assessments; conducting laboratory work; adhering to established budgets and
schedules; and preparing fieldwork summaries to be included in report development. This is a ¾ travel time fieldwork position
with the remainder of the time working at the West Chester’s archaeological laboratory. Traveling for non-local projects is
necessary.
Ability to work independently and manage field crew to excavate and screen shovel tests, navigate/traverse difficult terrain and
walk continuously throughout the day, recognize precontact Native American and historic-period artifacts, and describe soil
contexts with appropriate terminology is required. Ability to carry field equipment, personal gear (including hydration supplies
and lunch depending on distance from field vehicles) is expected. Pay starts at $20/hour and is dependent on experience.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in anthropology or archaeology and have completed an accredited archaeological field school;
- Three years’ experience including one year or more experience supervising field staff
- Prior experience with Trimble GPS and/or ArcGIS Collector/Survey 123/ Field Maps
