ABOUT THE JOB


Full Time Teaching Position –Instrumental Music Teacher

Instrumental Music Teacher ~ Band Director ~ Marching Band Director

GMHS is seeking a full-time Instrumental Music Teacher/Instrumental Music Department Director/Marching Band Director, who will also have other assigned duties, including Color Guard, Winter Guard, Winter Percussion, and overseeing clubs associated with any of these programs. The person filling this position will work closely with the staff and the larger community.

Pre-Screening Standards:

Must hold a current Colorado Teaching Certificate or License in the required area of Instrumental Music K-12.

Bachelor of Music Education K-12, or equivalent.

Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team as evidenced by current evaluation and letters of recommendation.

Demonstrated successful experience with students in instrumental music, including: knowledge of current instructional strategies and techniques for wind, percussion, string instruments and music theory; knowledge of recruitment and retention strategies for instrumental music students; and understanding of and commitment to state and district music standards.

Qualifications:

Demonstrated ability to incorporate the use of communication and information technologies to expand student knowledge of music and music performance.

Demonstrated effective communication with band parents, administrators and other teachers.

Demonstrated understanding of vertical teaming and a willingness to support Green Mountain High School Area Articulation team and the GMHS Arts and Humanities Program, including events such as collaboration with the Spring Musical.

Demonstrated strategies that build positive relationships with students, parents, instructional staff and the parent booster club.

Demonstrated superior knowledge in instructional strategies of marching band, concert band, orchestra, jazz techniques and music theory.

Demonstrated ability to create a caring and safe classroom environment, where all children are consistently engaged in appropriate, meaningful learning activities.

Demonstrated ability to create a classroom environment of creativity and energy.

Demonstrated willingness to attend professional training for curriculum development.

Requirements:

  • Willingness to become a contributing member of the GMHS Area vertical team.
  • Willingness to attend all GMHS Area performances including but not limited to high school football games, marching contests, high school concerts, middle school concerts, area festivals, honor bands and instructional clinics for instrumental music.
  • Willingness to conduct all aspects of instruction at Green Mountin High School including summer rehearsals and rehearsals outside of the school day.
  • Models strong values including a superior work ethic and strong leadership skills.
  • Ability to create an environment that supports the learning styles and intelligences of all students through equitable implementation of quality instructional strategies.
  • Ability to manage time and schedules flexibly in a way that maximizes student learning and participation in the GMHS music program.
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities effectively.
  • Understands and accepts the responsibility for student continuation in instrumental music at all levels; elementary, middle school and high school.

**Annual salary noted above is based on an 8 hour day and full days worked calendar. Any position that is less than a full FTE/8 hours per day or late start will be prorated accordingly.

RESPONSIBILITIES


SUMMARY: Manage a successful instrumental music program. This includes developing students' individual and group performance skills; music literacy; proper instrumental technique; and providing performance opportunities using a variety of styles and genres. Work collaboratively within the performing arts department, other area music teachers, and with administration to ensure the instrumental program remains a strong part of the school course programming.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Plan; teach skills and concepts; assess; and reflect utilizing the Jeffco Public Schools instructional model, music curriculum tools, and Colorado Academic Standards in music.

Sequence instruction for the development of instrumental performance techniques and music reading.

Utilize effective and engaging rehearsal techniques and excellent communication skills.

Model and teach proper technique on all band and/or orchestra instruments, strings, brass, woodwinds, and percussion.

Select, organize, and program diverse and challenging repertoire for varying levels of ensembles.

Guide students as they engage with and appreciate the arts; and support them in becoming life-long creators.

Identify and diagnose individual and group performance challenges; and prescribe appropriate and effective growth feedback.

Seek out opportunities for professional growth in music, implement new learning in your practice, and reflect to allow for personal growth.

Collaborate with district and articulation area colleagues to grow a thriving and active instrumental music program from elementary to middle to high school.

Recruit and retain students to maintain sustainable enrollment.

Actively seek guest artists, clinicians, and conductors to continue development of ensembles.

Schedule regular, high quality concerts, and other performance opportunities to ensure students are engaged in the community and are growing as musicians.

Collaborate with school and community organizations, including boosters if applicable.

Demonstrate willingness to assist with the production and collaboration of school music events such as musical productions.

Participate in and prepare students for State and District Band and Orchestra Honor Ensembles.

Ensure that instruments, music, and equipment are properly used, maintained, stored, and that inventory records are accurate and current.

Utilize administrative skills to manage instrumental music budget, collaborative concerts, community performance schedules, required paperwork for field trips, etc.

QUALIFICATIONS: Must hold a valid Colorado teaching license or authorization. Must meet content-area qualifications, which could include the appropriate license endorsement, degree in the content area and Colorado State Board of Education approved content exam.

EXPERIENCE: Instructional experience in an instrumental music ensemble classroom.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & EQUIPMENT: Strong personal musicianship. Comprehensive knowledge of band and/or orchestra techniques, pedagogy, and skills. Effective and engaging rehearsal techniques and conducting skills. Effective communication skills. Ability to recruit and retain students.
