Small Boat Captain Job at CARDINAL POINT CAPTAINS INC
Cardinal Point Captains, Inc. (CPC) is seeking an experienced and well-qualified small boat captain to provide vessel support to the Great Lakes Research Center (GLRC) at Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan. The GLRC provides state-of-the-art laboratories to support research on a broad array of topics, ranging from air–water interactions to biogeochemistry to food web relationships. The GLRC also contains a lake-level marine facility and convenient deep-water docking, providing a year-round home for Michigan Tech's small boats, ranging from 22’ to 36’, including the USCG commercially inspected R/V Agassiz.
A qualified person is required to safely and efficiently operate and maintain these research vessels and GLRC shore and supporting facilities. When not operating a GLRC vessel, the employee will support other GLRC field work or shop work as needed. Vessel personnel assignments and cruise requirements are detailed by the GLRC management team based on mission requirements, and vessel maintenance.
CPC is looking for a captain with experience with missions in the field of marine sciences (oceanographic missions, hydrographic missions, general research missions, etc.). Our ideal candidate will not only be a capable boat handler but also versed in the maintenance of small boats.
This is a seasonal position, approximately May 1 - December 1 each year, expected 40 hours per week during the season.
Tasks
- Ensure the safe navigation and mechanical operation of the vessel in which assigned.
- Maintain the safety and well-being of the crew and passengers, as well as timely execution of the assigned mission.
- Properly mobilize and demobilize vessels before and after each cruise, including cleaning, systems checks, general condition inspection, and stocking provisions as required.
- Perform regular vessel maintenance, preventative maintenance, and light repairs such as boat checks, fueling, vessel logs, fluid changes, cleaning, and more.
- Travel as needed (typically 2 – 3 days per trip) in the Great Lakes region to work with GLRC and partner organizations.
- Ensure all procedures and engineering practices comply with the current and appropriate regulating authorities such as the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR); the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC); and the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).
- Exercise prudent judgment at all times. Be willing, able, and capable of responding to shipboard emergencies and actively participate in drills.
- Help coordinate and support emergent repairs to small boat assets if and when required. Help coordinate engineering work requiring certified technician assistance from engineering contractors, naval architects, electricians, and marine surveyors if required.
- Verify cruise and float plans and communicate with the shore-side point of contact frequently when underway.
- Conduct the vessel pre-departure checklist, hold a safety briefing for all embarked personnel at the start of every cruise day, and ensure that all safety procedures are understood and adhered to while underway.
- Document all vessel-related activities in the ship’s Log.
- Be ready and available for emergency responses.
- Possess an active USCG Master Great Lakes and Inland license (25 tons or above).
- Experience working on scientific or research vessels, or similar law enforcement vessels.
- Ability to work collegially with scientists, natural resources managers, and educators.
- Experience operating overhead load-handling equipment such as winches, cranes, A-Frames, and small cranes.
- Experience with deployment and recovery of scientific equipment using A-frame, oceanographic winch, capstan, and boat cranes.
- Experience performing maintenance tasks and troubleshooting marine engines and systems.
- Working knowledge of current U.S. Coast Guard navigation rules.
- Working knowledge of FCC marine radio licensing requirements and operations procedures, including marine distress communications.
- Physically able to lift and carry 75 pounds to assist with mission mobilization and maintenance.
- Physically able to work in confined machinery spaces and remote and rugged offshore environments.
Highly desired skills and experience
- Knowledge and experience with Great Lakes’ coastlines
- Experience driving/following transect lines at low speed
- USCG 100-ton Master license is preferred
