The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking to fill a Highway Maintenance Worker 2's in Pasco, WA. These journey-level position's are members of the regional maintenance organization. Operating a wide variety of highway equipment and tools, these positions are responsible for maintenance and repair of highways and highway structures to ensure the safe and efficient movement of people and commerce. These positions perform a variety of skilled maintenance tasks and may occasionally lead a crew in the absence of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3. These positions support the mission of WSDOT by providing necessary roadway maintenance to Washington’s highways.
What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you will:
Asphalt and concrete pavement maintenance and repair.- Drainage maintenance including catch basins, sedimentation facilities, and ditches.
- Erosion and slide repair.
- Sign maintenance, and repair.
- Guardrail, fence, and impact attenuator installation and repair.
- Danger tree removal; vegetation management, including pesticide application.
- Establish, maintain and repair landscaped areas.
- Haul materials such as rip rap, hot and cold asphalt.
- Remove litter on state right-of-way.
- Remove dead animals and debris from roadways.
- Track, document, and report daily work activities.
- Account for inventory and inventories highway section.
- Assists with constructing third party damage estimates.
- Snow and ice control.
These are Highway Maintenance Worker 2 (HMW2) positions. However, the hiring manager reserves the right to fill the position at the lower level (HMW1 depending on qualifications), providing an opportunity for an individual to gain the required experience on the job as part of a formal “in-training” plan.
To be considered for the HMW 2 In Training level:
- Valid current Driver’s License
- Demonstrate a basic knowledge of hand tools, power equipment, and some background working with equipment.
- One (1) year of experience performing roadway maintenance, farming, excavation, construction, heavy equipment operation, or equivalent.
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B with endorsement N and without airbrakes restriction, and ability to obtain Class A within 12 months of hire.
- Must maintain a CDL medical card.
- Two (2) years of experience performing roadway maintenance, farming, excavation, construction, heavy equipment operation, or equivalent.
- Possession of a valid Traffic Control/Flagging card with experience performing traffic control per MUTCD including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging (required within 6 months of hire).
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- High school graduation or possession of a GED certificate.
- Washington Administrative Code (WAC) 357-16-197 mandates that all employees who work for executive cabinet agencies (which includes the Department of Transportation) must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Compliance with this mandate is a condition of employment with WSDOT. Exemption may be granted for religious or medical purposes; however, accommodations will be subject to approval based on the essential functions required of the position.
- In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
