Job Title: Senior Fire Protection/Hydraulic Engineer > Reporting to Head of Product/Hardware
About Frontline Wildfire Defense
Our mission is to protect homes, families and communities from wildfire disasters.
Frontline enables customers to track wildfires, receive important alerts, and safely navigate a wildfire, while protecting a customer’s home with the remotely operated Frontline Wildfire Defense System. With multiple levels of redundancy, our home defense system hydrates the materials of a home and its surrounding area to prevent ignition from flying embers - the #1 cause of structure loss during wildfire.
We are a small team in the early stages of growth, and yet we have already achieved significant milestones in protecting homes and earning revenue through successfully installing systems throughout Northern and Southern California. We have an experienced team of engineers, product designers, and investors and we are growing rapidly.
We are seeking a Senior Fire Protection/Hydraulic Engineer, who will help us keep our hydraulic design on the cutting edge and able to scale. This is a great opportunity to join us on the ground floor. You are organized, passionate about making a big impact in a company with a big mission, and work well in a flexible, dynamic environment. As part of the initial team, you will have real autonomy, ownership, and accountability as well as the opportunity for an equity stake in the company.

Responsibilities

HYDRAULIC DESIGN

  • Review construction contract documents and coordinate with sales person, project manager, and potential client contacts (General Contractor/owner, sub-contractors) to gather the required information to design the project’s sprinkler system

  • Create detailed drawings through extensive use of AutoCAD, AutoSprink, or HydraCAD type programs.
  • Perform hydraulic and water supply calculations
  • Maintain project drawings files, drawing library and associated records.
  • Create and manage a design guide that outlines how a Frontline system should be designed and installed to meet our hydration prescription requirements
  • Establish and maintain a design feedback loop process to ensure that systems are being installed per design guidelines and any changes on-site are recorded
  • Scope and create a design/build platform to support the scaling of sales and operations through multiple channels.

SYSTEM ENGINEERING

  • Develop and validate hydraulics calculator and design tools to facilitate preliminary designs by sales team
  • Research, test, and validate improved components and hydraulic system concepts.
  • Create, publish and manage documentation such as system/kit schematic diagrams, component specifications, setup/installation instruction sets, etc.
FIELD ASSISTANCE

  • Assist in and provide instruction to field crews for proper installation/setup of new components, equipment or kits
  • Providing exemplary service to fellow team members as well as clients
  • Be on call to answer questions from field crews
  • Help troubleshoot and debug system issues that arise in the field
  • Perform project management duties such as writing change orders, RFI's and other job related correspondences.
CODE COMPLIANCE/PLANNING

  • Help validate and improve Frontline’s hydration prescription by providing fire science data and engineering and by assisting in testing
  • Understand local codes and regulations and ensure that Frontline Systems are compliant
  • Help plan for and write drafts of future exterior sprinkler codes/standards
This role requires extensive field verification and on-site project review. A successful candidate will be able to communicate and integrate prescriptive design into a design/build process that efficiently supports the field application of exterior sprinkler systems. An objective will be the definition of a process of design/build that can scale to support internal and external sales and operations needs in the fast growing exterior sprinkler space. A successful outcome will implement a feedback loop of design to implementation that will support product enhancements and dev ops uses.
