General James M. Gavin Power Plant is a 2,600-megawatt supercritical coal-fired power station in the village of Cheshire, Ohio, United States. It is owned by Lightstone Generation LLC, a 50–50 joint venture of The Blackstone Group L.P. and ArcLight Capital.
The Health and Safety Specialist is responsible for managing, driving, and ensuring the safety culture of the organization. Partners with branch management to recruit, train and maintain employees who are safety-first focused, while developing and delivering safety programs to ensure a continued safe working environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Performs oversight and compliance with all federal, state, municipal rules, and regulations.
- Responsible for all safety functions of the Gavin facility, including but not limited to culture, continuous improvement initiatives, reporting, KPI tracking, training compliance, policy, and procedure development / reviews.
- Impact the facility culture in a positive matter, improving beliefs, behavior, and results.
- Lead facility safety goals and objectives.
- Effectively communicate in a professional positive manner with Gavin internal personnel, external contractors, and corporate leadership.
- Lead pro-active safety training and round table efforts to improve individual awareness. Including but not limited to safety committees and programs.
- Maintain safety metrics related to plant performance: good catches, near misses, first aids, recordables and lost time accidents.
- Trend job observation compliance and data inputs, provide recommendations to the pro-actively guide the facility.
- Work in a team atmosphere determining solutions to challenges, as well as opportunity identification and implementation.
- Lead and/or a participating member for all safety related Root Cause Analysis investigations.
- Responsible for Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) facility compliance, including policies, procedures, software, and hardware improvement opportunities.
- Periodic arc flash compliance audits.
- Lead and/or participate in rescue training initiatives for the facility rescue team.
- Incorporate all of Gavin’s safety training documentation into an electronic Computer Based Training for Gavin annual trainings, new hire orientations, contractor orientation, and contractor trainings.
- Supports station leadership in the development and execution of station objectives.
- Maintain a presence in the facility to continuously monitor changing environments.
- Manage budget line items related to the facility safety initiatives.
- Participate in weekly work management planning reviews, work with the team members through challenges collectively.
- Formally review all Management of Change requests for facility modifications, upgrades, etc.
- Coordinate industrial hygiene sampling of various tasks and areas throughout the facility.
- Ensure fire system compliance, inspections, reporting, etc.
- Obtain and maintain a valid Transportation Work Identification Credential (TWIC).
- Self -motivated to lead corrective actions and improvement opportunities.
- Must be able to work varying hours to support station efforts and tasks.
- Performs other duties and tasks as assigned by the General Manager.
- Bachelor’s degree in safety technology, safety management, occupational safety, or CSP with 5 years of experience.
- Knowledge of OSHA and NFPA.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with an organized team.
- 5 years of power plant or industrial experience.
- Diverse background of skills including operations and maintenance preferred.
- Demonstrated strong leadership skills with potential for future advancement.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Good public speaking and presentation skills, ability to influence without authority.
- General software knowledge in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Outlook, etc.), Asset Suite, General Physics (GPI), Maintenance Strategies Inc. (MSI), and ExacqVision.
