RESEARCH ASSOCIATE, Ph.D, M.S.

GENERAL SUMMARY:

The person who qualifies to fill this Research Associate position will become an integral part of our research team, contributing to our success by assisting in the development, production and characterization of recombinant proteins and protein conjugates for CNS drug development. The Research Associate will be responsible for developing, isolating, and testing recombinant proteins by using cutting-edge synthetic bio-nanotechnology, analyzing data, writing grant applications, and preparing articles for publications.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Development of recombinant protein expression, purification, and analysis methods through applications of molecular biology, cell biology, protein chromatography and protein chemistry. Experiments may include the following: recombinant protein expressions, purification and analyses of DNA/RNA/proteins, gene editing with CRISPR-Cas9, Zing Finger Nucleases (ZNF) or Transcription Activator-Like Effector Nucleases (TALEN), molecular cloning, transient and stable cell transfections, FACS, RT-PCR, qPCR, ELISA, SDS-PAGE, gel electrophoresis, Western Blotting, FPLC, IMAC, dynamic light scattering (DLS), immunohistochemistry, radioligand binding, autoradiography, in situ hybridization, and preparing special materials for preclinical animal studies. In addition, the Research Associate must be capable to:

  • Design and provide custom proteins and protein-complexes for development of drugs for central nervous system (CNS) diseases.
  • Develop or execute protocols to amplify and purify expression vectors or plasmids.
  • Develop and direct recombinant protein production in a variety of systems including E. coli, yeast, insect, and mammalian cells (e.g., HEK293/CHO).
  • Develop and optimize methodologies for various recombinant protein expression systems.
  • Establish and optimize pilot production of various protein types.
  • Develop or utilize a wide range of biophysical assays including HPLC, SEC-MALS, DLS, and/or LC-MS/MS.
  • Perform purification and analysis of DNA, RNA, and recombinant proteins.
  • Actively contribute to project teams and work effectively to help advance our research programs.
  • Show a strong ability to multi-task, work independently, be highly self-motivated, and work in a highly collaborative small team environment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ph.D. or M.S. with minimum one year of experience in recombinant protein production post degree.

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

  • Extensive experience with expression vector/plasmid design, recombinant protein production and DNA/RNA/protein purification and characterization systems.
  • Preferable experience with neuronal cell types and neuronal cell cultures.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Good organizational skills, detail oriented.
  • Ability to methodically record data and to analyze data using statistics.
  • Ability to perform a variety of routine tests and prioritize work.
  • Knowledge of various computer programs and scientific applications, databases, etc.
  • Ability to demonstrate professionalism.
  • Be able to perform other work-relevant duties as may be assigned.
  • Excellent team player with strong verbal and written communication.
