The Public Utilities Trainee positions are seasonal, part-time positions (no benefits) with a preferred hiring rate of $12.58 per hour. Prior experience is not required as paid, on-the-job training will be provided.
The Public Utilities Trainees will primarily be responsible for one of the following three projects and may indicate preferred project(s) upon application submission:
Performing fire hydrant maintenance and painting;
Customer service response in the field and meter maintenance; and
General grounds maintenance, including mowing.
Physical Requirements: This is medium work requiring the exertion of 80 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects, and some heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, use of measuring devices, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, and wearing a respirator.
Minimum Requirements:
- Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of the 10th grade.
- Minimum Age Requirements:
- Fire Hydrant Maintenance and Painting Project & Customer Service Response in the Field and Meter Maintenance Project: Applicants must be at least 17 years of age prior to hire date, approximately 3 weeks after initial application date.
- General Grounds Maintenance Project: Applicants must be at least 18 years of age prior to hire date, approximately 3 weeks after initial application date.
- Possession of a valid driver's license.
- In compliance with the state and federal regulations, applicants who are exactly 17 years of age at hire date must have successfully completed a state-approved driver education course and have no record of any moving violations at the time of hire.
- All applicants must have a driving record in compliance with the City's Safety Program.
- Availability to work up to 40 hours per week.
The selected candidates for these positions will be subject to the following screenings and must receive satisfactory results:
- DMV record review;
- Job-specific physical; and
- Criminal background check.
