Position Summary:
The Product Manager is responsible for the management of all speech generating devices (SGDs), including hardware, software, vocabulary, and accessories within a specific product line. The Product Manager leads inter-departmental teams, assigns product owner responsibilities, and directs external resources. Responsibilities include product justifications, product definitions, development priorities, and ensuring that products meet client needs throughout their life cycle. This role interacts extensively with company functions such as Engineering, Marketing, Production, Service, Sales, Funding, the Field Teams, and International Subsidiaries.


Activities, Duties, Responsibilities:

  • Works with the Director of Product Development to develop and refine product line strategies and goals, forecasts, and pricing strategies for the SGD products and vocabulary systems.
  • Collaborates with other product managers of different product lines around priorities and product needs.
  • Translates product line strategies into product requirements and specifications for the devices, vocabulary, and support materials.
  • Creates project plans that includes development schedules and budgets in collaboration with the engineering team and other necessary departments.
  • Ensures that projects meet the functional, budgetary and timeline requirements.
  • Directs organizational communication to ensure timely and accurate information is available for other departments and functions as well as managers of services related to the product line.
  • Provides status reports as needed throughout the organization.
  • Collaborates with the marketing team to help translate new product benefits and features into effective messaging as well as the development of marketing plans for the product line as a whole.
  • Maintains regular communication with other departments to ensure that products conform to the regulations to which they are subject (e.g., FDA, CE, FCC etc) and fulfills necessary legal and regulatory obligations.
  • Interacts on an ongoing basis with customers, as well as our field staff, marketing, engineering, and other staff regarding product ideas and customer needs.
  • Collaborates with Engineering, Manufacturing, and QA to ensure product and quality specifications are maintained.
  • Establishes and maintains deep knowledge of the AAC market and industry participants, performing periodic competitive analysis of their products against equivalents.
  • Researches and gathers information and data necessary to prepare and submit the Product Justification Document (PJD) for project approval and prepares and submits the Functional Specifications for approval.
  • Works with Engineering Sales, Funding, Manufacturing, and others to manage product configurations, features, pricing, and policies within relevant company systems (QAD, etc.).
  • Collaborates with staff to ensure that products have been thoroughly tested, debugged, and documented before being released to the market.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field is required. Equivalent experience will be taken into consideration. Master’s Degree in business or technology/technology-related field is preferred.
  • 5 years of product management experience, preferably in the medical device or a technical industry is preferred.
  • 5 years of experience in AAC or related field is desirable.
  • Demonstrated success defining and launching successful products.
  • Proven ability to influence cross-functional teams and work in a collaborative environment.
  • Familiarity with software development and the agile framework is preferred.
  • Familiarity with the product development cycle is preferred.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to interact and collaborate with a wide range of staff and customers. Duties require extensive contact with individuals both inside and outside the organization.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Experience coordinating and managing multiple tasks/ projects.
  • Ability to balance competing priorities, and making decisions for team when necessary.
  • Communication skills including resourcefulness, tact and the ability to negotiate, influence, persuade, and obtain approval through communication.
