Class Summary
Under general supervision, performs skilled work involving the operation of motor street sweepers and related equipment; and performs other work as required.
Representative Duties
The following typical tasks and responsibilities are representative of this classification. They are descriptive, not limiting.
Essential Duties:
Essential Duties:
- Sweeps streets with a specialized motor sweeper, following an assigned route
- Transports and deposits sweepings to dumping points
- Makes periodic adjustments to sweeper brooms
- Reports mechanical defects of all automotive equipment utilized
- Perform tasks of street and sewer maintenance workers during heavy rains or when sweepers are unable to operate such as cleaning catch basins, etc.
- Lift heavy objects such as manhole covers and storm grates
- May operate a skip-loader, dump truck, self-loader truck, sand spreader truck or other related equipment during periods of emergency
- Keeps daily records of work performed
- Wash, clean and lube sweeper daily
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of:
- Operating and maintenance characteristics of the automotive equipment described above
- Occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to assigned equipment
- Understand and carry out oral and written instructions
- Read and understand City maps and sweeping routes
- Two (2) years of experience in the operation of heavier and more complex public works equipment, including one (1) year experience in motor sweeper operation
- Possession of a valid Class "B" California driver's license (with tank and airbrake endorsements)

Physical or Special Working Conditions:
- Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions and to work in confined areas and with exposure to unpleasant and potentially hazardous conditions
- Must be able to work weekends, holidays and emergency call-outs
- Must be able to work nights, multiple shifts and overtime

1-4 years of service: 10 days per year.
5-13 years of service: 15 days per year.
14+ years of service: 20 days per year.
VACATION - FIRE SAFETY SHIFT PERSONNEL ONLY:
1-4 years of service: 4.68 (24-hr. duty shifts)
5-15 years of service: 7.02 (24-hr. duty shifts)
16+ years of service: 9.36 (24-hr. duty shifts)
HOLIDAYS: 13 paid holidays per year.
SICK LEAVE: Earned at the rate of one working day per month of service to a maximum of 120 days; portions therafter may be convertible.
ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE: 10 days per year for General Supervisory and Management employees.
