Perry Nuclear Power Plant has vacancies which exist in Maintenance Services. These positions are represented by U.W.U.A. Local 270

The Jr Service Mechanic is an entry level position in Maintenance Services. These positions have the potential to progress to Mechanical or Electrical shops.

A. Duties

Under close supervision, assists other employees of a higher classification, under directive supervision performs work and operates in the routine custodial cleaning and maintenance of the yards, grounds, and buildings, assists other employees, until he/she acquires the necessary skills to perform duties such as:

  • Sweeping, scrubbing, washing, and mopping as required, including operating the necessary mechanized cleaning equipment;
  • Providing all site landscaping services, including care of grasses, shrubbery, trees, gardens, etc., and operating machinery, as qualified when assigned;
  • Removing snow, ice, and dirt from all site walkways, driveways, parking lots, streets, and other areas; operating machinery, as qualified, and assigned;
  • Assembling, moving, and rearranging office equipment and furniture, transporting supplies and other material as assigned;
  • Erecting scaffolding and understanding all safety requirements for scaffolding;
  • Replacing light bulbs and fluorescent lamps in site facilities and offices;
  • Driving automobiles, trucks, fork-lift trucks, etc.;
  • Maintaining and repairing track, roadbed, and switches at the site, as required;
  • Being responsible for the preparation of records in connection with the work; reporting errors, and making suggestions for improvements of Plant procedures and tests;
  • Reporting abnormal conditions observed or encountered such as: abnormal operating conditions, safety conditions and violations of security procedures;
  • Assisting in rigging and lifting operations as needed; performing similar or less skilled duties as assigned.
  • Performing cleaning, scraping, brushing, preserving and conditioning of parts, equipment and structure; performing building maintenance; under close supervision assisting in the assembly, disassembly, repair, replacement and installation of the turbine, reactor vessel, condenser and Plant auxiliary equipment;
  • Operating portable tools; operating ordinary shop tools and material requiring low tolerances; salvaging material or parts; performing drilling, grinding, cutting, shearing, filing, bending, forming, chipping and scraping operation.

B. Qualifications

Must meet the Company’s requirements as to General Qualifications and must meet the necessary requirements associated with the Plant training programs; in addition:

  • Must be able to understand and carry out instructions;
  • Must be capable of achieving and maintaining the qualifications and training necessary to perform their assigned duties. This includes satisfactory completion of all required training and Qualification Cards;
  • Must have a valid State of Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles License and must be able to meet any additional driving requirements including Commercial Driver’s License, as the Company may deem necessary;
  • Must be capable of understanding the need for care and attention when working around operating Plant equipment, shop equipment, and office equipment;
  • Must be able to learn:
    • The effective, safe use and care of the tools, equipment and material common to the work;
    • Simple routine operations; and
    • The safety rules of the Company, applicable to the work.
  • Must be physically able and willing to work in elevated or confined quarters and in radiation fields, and to utilize protective clothing and equipment essential to the requirements of maintaining a nuclear power Plant.
  • Must complete training and qualifications to proceed in line of progression to a Maintenance Service Mechanic. Upon completion of the required qualifications, and a need within the Company exists, the qualified employee will be promoted into that classification.
  • Must have knowledge and the ability to follow the Safety and Security practices, policies and procedures associated with the Plant and equipment.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain unescorted access to the protected area of the plant.
  • Must reside within a 45-minute response time to plant.
  • This position requires a recommended result from Edison Electric Institute (EEI) Power Plant Maintenance and Operations Selection System (MASS/POSS) and satisfactory completion of all aptitude testing requested by Company.
