Position Summary:
- With limited supervision of an Attending Pathologist, accessions, performs gross examination of surgical specimens, including dissection, description and tissue sectioning for histological preparation.
- Obtains specimens from the operation rooms and performs appropriate examination including frozen sectioning and reporting gross, specimen photography and radiography.
- Collects and distributes tissue to tumor bank. Responsible for the daily care and maintenance of the grossing room including cryostats and staining setup and cameras.
- Monitors specimen storage and discard. Monitors long-term storage of permanent save specimens and items.
- Monitors the gross room workflow and organizes personnel scheduling. Is responsible for inventory maintenance and conformance with the divisional quality assurance program.
- Assists in the training of new employees and house staff in departmental procedures including safety, specimen photography, specimen dissection, dictation, use of cryostats and staining setup, tissue banking and daily workflow/operations of the gross room.
- Participates in the development and revision, as well as monitoring compliance with laboratory policies and procedures and may be required to participate in other tasks and duties required for the functioning of the laboratory.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education
- Graduation from a NAACLS accredited baccalaureate or post baccalaureate Pathologists Assistant Training program and ASCP BOR certified (or ASCP BOR exam eligible) or completion of a Bachelor’s degree with a major or minor or equivalent in any of the biological or allied health sciences and ASCP BOR certified or exam eligible is preferred. (must meet minimum education requirements for high complexity testing per CLIA)
Work Experience
- Work requires a minimum of 5 years' experience as a Pathologist Assistant.
- Certification
- Certification as a Pathologist Assistant, PA (ASCP), is required.
