Do you have an interest in the science of seed and thriving in a laboratory environment? Then this unique position might just be for you! The SC Department of Agriculture is looking for a great candidate in our in-house Seed Laboratory. In this position you will:
- Perform purity analysis on all crops, vegetable and turf grass seed lots according to the Association of Official Seed Analysts (AOSA) Rules for Testing Seeds or other protocol as directed to determine kind, variety, purity components and noxious weeds.
- Prepare, blend, divide and weigh representative seed working samples according to the proper method for analysis of each seed kind.
- Plant seeds for germination according to the methods adopted by the AOSA rules and as stated in the South Carolina Seed Law.
- Perform seed identifications; interpret unusual and regular germination results and perform special test for germination.
- Conduct scientific seed germination analyses or special analyses.
- Receive and document seed samples and maintains records/reports as to seed quality.
- Develop and maintain relationships with co-workers and members of various seed associations.
- Collaborate with the supervisor on administrative tasks and assist with coordinating training opportunities for the laboratory.
- Support seed control related duties as needed.
- Participate in projects, programs, and activities as assigned by Commissioner or Assistant Commissioners which support the agency mission.

- A bachelor's degree in biological, natural, agriculture science or related field and work experience that is directly related to the area of employment.
- Valid Driver's License and ability to operate a vehicle.
- Must obtain AOSA Certified Seed Analyst status’ by fifth anniversary of hire date to remain in Agricultural Associate II (LA25) classification.
- Must have good eyesight (corrective lenses allowed), manual dexterity and ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Must be able to sit for long periods.
- Must be able to travel for overnight out-of-state trainings and meetings
