The North Carolina Department of Administration Facility Management Division is seeking a motivated, enthusiastic, and skilled Grounds Worker II to serve as lead worker and technical resource to landscape crews involved in a variety of landscape maintenance work.
Key Responsibilities:
- Preparing for and planting shrubs, trees, flowers, and lawns.
- Installing hardened landscape structures
- Implementing scheduled landscape maintenance
- Diagnosing diseased shrubs, trees, flowers, and lawns and taking remedial action
- Assisting in repair of landscape equipment.
- Maintaining beds including pruning, weeding, mulching, fertilizing, and spraying of plant material.
- Requires the use of special tools for cultivation, maintenance and transportation of plants and repair of landscape equipment.
- Applying chemicals and water to plants, turf, or plant collection.
Division/ Department Overview
The Department of Administration serves as the business manager for North Carolina state government and provides leadership to state government agencies for the effective, efficient, economical and equitable delivery of services to the public. The department also provides assistance and services to several advocacy programs that serve diverse segments of the state’s population that have traditionally been underserved. The agency’s mission directs departmental efforts to: acquire, develop and maintain properties and facilities; create and operate an efficient system to purchase and dispose of goods and services to meet the needs of government agencies; provide excellent operational services to state employees; achieve fair and equitable opportunities and representation for various segments of the population that have special needs; and to provide administrative support to independent state government agencies.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
QUALIFIED APPLICANTS MUST SUBMIT AN APPLICATION THAT CLEARLY REFLECTS WORK EXPERIENCE THAT DEMONSTRATES THE FOLLOWING:
- Considerable knowledge of plant maintenance procedures used in landscape installation and grounds maintenance.
- Ability to observe plants and identify plants and plant problems.
- Ability to assess condition and health of plants.
- Ability to lift heavy materials and to perform manual tasks.
- Ability to operate heavy equipment.
- Ability to organize a work schedule, determine priorities, manage a crew, and maintain effective work relationships.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions, and to maintain required records.
- Working knowledge of the use of personal protective equipment and safety procedures
MANAGEMENT PREFERENCE:
- Strong attention to detail.
- Strong interpersonal/ human relations skills and ability to work collaboratively with others.
- Ability to operate a personal computer and utilize various software programs.
Other Requirements:
- Valid NC Driver's License. Out of State Applicants must have valid Driver's License and acquire NC Driver's License within 60 days of hire.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of progressive experience in horticultural work; or Associate's degree in agriculture and natural resources, greenhouse and grounds maintenance, horticulture technology, landscape gardening or closely related field from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications May require North Carolina Commercial Driver s License.
