Job Description
Our Capacity Expansion and Electricity Markets team is hiring for professionals to join the Grid Planning and Analysis Center (GPAC). GPAC research staff contribute to an exciting portfolio of energy research & analysis, applying advanced modeling and simulation tools to optimally plan for, design, and analyze distribution and bulk power systems.
We are researchers, engineers, software developers, modelers, physicists, product managers, thought leaders, system thinkers, and life-long learners. Our staff engage in different research projects and find ways to contribute uniquely based on our interests and skillsets.

Example types of ongoing research and analysis include:
  • Innovating new data, models, tools, and systems that are needed for the future grid
  • Working directly with U.S. and international communities to directly impact their pursuit of clean energy
  • Examining the necessary grid services and market structures to support the future grid
  • Developing the design and integration of new technologies and systems
  • Studying the impacts and developing mitigation strategies of climate change and extreme events
We partner with DOE, other federal agencies, states, utilities, ISO/RTOs, communities, and technology developers on grid planning and analysis. Our work informs policymakers and utilities by developing and analyzing future grid scenarios that answer big questions about how the electric power system is transforming.
For this researcher role, our portfolio of projects is constantly evolving. Potential projects include a range of efforts to support power system and energy-system planning through modeling. These include:
  • Projects with an emphasis on analysis related to decarbonization pathways for international partners in South/Central America
  • Projects exploring emission impacts across a suite of power system expansion futures
  • Projects with a strong tool develop and coding element to support an integrated modeling approach
Additional job responsibilities may include:
  • Developing and advancing grid modeling tools
  • Executing models, analyzing, and interpreting results
  • Project coordination with teams
  • Researching, acquiring, organizing, and analysis of large data sets
  • Contributing to the writing of results and analyses in peer-reviewed journals and technical reports
  • Communicating findings with both internal and external stakeholders
  • Collaborating with other researchers, industry, and communities

Basic Qualifications
This role can be hired as a Level II or Level III.

Level III:
Relevant PhD . Or, relevant Master's Degree and 3 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 5 or more years of experience . Demonstrates broad understanding and wide application of engineering technical procedures, principles, theories and concepts in the field. General knowledge of other related disciplines. Demonstrates leadership in one or more areas of team, task or project lead responsibilities. Demonstrated experience in management of projects. Very good writing, interpersonal and communication skills.

Level II:
Relevant Master's Degree . Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 2 or more years of experience . General knowledge and application of engineering technical standards, principles, theories, concepts and techniques. Training in team, task or project leadership responsibilities. Intermediate abilities and knowledge of practices and techniques. Beginning experience in project management. Good writing, interpersonal and communication skills.

Additional Required Qualifications
  • Strong written and oral communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in team settings.
  • Background or education in engineering, economics, or other analytical-based fields.
  • Experience with developing and running optimization-based planning tools, such as capacity expansion or production cost models.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with modeling and programming languages (such as GAMS, python, or Julia), electric power systems, and data analysis.
  • Exposure to energy futures modeling and attention to detail.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: Researcher III / Annual Salary Range: $75,500 - $135,900
Job Profile: Researcher II / Annual Salary Range: $69,400 - $114,500
NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, as well as the position's work location, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
