Essential Job Duties
The primary duties of this Extension Assistant position are the collection of agriculture production cost information and the development and distribution of crop and livestock enterprise budgets. As a primary area of responsibility, this position will collect, compile, and help to make available farm cost data for a diverse array of production systems in North Carolina and the broader Southeast region. This information will be used to inform USDA program development and delivery. The approach used for data collection is based on the USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service (NCRS)’s itemized farm cost component lists. In addition, the incumbent in this role will also support enterprise budget development, promotion, and user training. In doing so, this position will support and interact with key stakeholders including NC growers, CALS faculty, extension specialists and agents, and industry partners.
This position will be based in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics located on the campus of NC State University. The successful candidate will report directly to the Farm Management Extension Associate and work closely with faculty and staff in ARE and other departments, county extension personnel, and other organizations which support NC farms and agribusinesses. Day-to-day functions will require a farm- level production familiarity with the major crops and livestock produced in NC and throughout the Southeastern U.S. This position will also require excellent communication and collaboration skills with research, extension and industry partners in order to collect and verify accurate data. Moderate travel will be required.
Specific job duties include, but are not limited to:
Collection of farm production cost data:
- Annual farm-level research of production practices and uses of equipment, fertilizers, chemicals and other inputs for agricultural production systems,.
- Cost and production practice information from the Southeast farming community, state extension services and government agencies, and industry partners.
- Direct interaction with USDA concerning farm cost component list updates and data audit standards.
- Clear communication and persistence to gather difficult-to-collect data.
Budgeting responsibilities:
- Maintain and update enterprise budgets and cost of production information for key NC crops and livestock.
- Support the development of new enterprise budgets covering additional crops, livestock, production systems.
- Work with ARE faculty and staff for background budget data and budget formatting.
- Budget format development based on stakeholder needs and suggestions.
- Support efforts to conduct feasibility studies concerning the viability of new crops as well as the adoption of new practices and technologies for crops and livestock.
Other duties:
- Serve as a resource and support to ARE, the Cooperative Extension network, and other stakeholders concerning production costs and practices, availability and quality of relevant data, and other related items.
- Travel to meet with stakeholders, attend meetings and conferences, etc. to collect and to present information about these enterprise budgets and other programs offered by ARE, NC State Extension and USDA.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics, agribusiness management, agronomy, animal science, economics, business administration, finance or another closely related field, with at least 3 years of relevant professional experience.
Other Required Qualifications
- Strong organizational and communication skills (oral and written).
- Experience with farm-level budgeting and analysis of production costs.
- Proficiency with the Microsoft Office software with proficiency in using Excel or the willingness to complete training as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant Master’s degree with related experience.
- Knowledge of and experience with NC Cooperative Extension and USDA programming.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze cost data and develop enterprise budgets.
- Farm-level familiarity with the major crops and livestock production systems in North Carolina and the broader Southeastern U.S. region.
- The ability to interface and develop relationships with a diverse array of colleagues and clients including, but not limited to the following: faculty in both ARE and other relevant disciplines at NC State, county extension personnel, relevant stakeholder groups, farm and agribusiness clients, etc.
