JOB TITLE: ESTIMATOR

DEPARTMENT: Estimating

LOCATION: Watertown, New York

SUPERVISOR: Estimating Manager

GENERAL PURPOSE OF THE JOB: Estimator will be responsible for the accurate, timely preparation of complete cost estimates for assigned projects.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES OF THE JOB:

Document control and review of all estimate background information, including client’s Request for Quotation (RFQ), internal Request for Estimate (RFE), correspondence, drawings, and specifications from both paper copy and electronic documents, and preparation of a work breakdown structure for the project estimate.

Manage and track assigned estimate progress to coordinate requirements with the necessary parties involved.

Conduct quantity verification within the project cost estimate, utilizing various software tools, and develop computerized takeoff sheets to accurately identify all costs for the project estimate.

Identify potential risks and betterments for each assigned project, and report to manager these findings.

Solicit labor union representatives for wage determinations, and material vendors for respective pricing for the estimates.

Assist the purchasing department with the preparation of subcontractor bid packages.

Create complete cost estimates using corporate estimating software, including all labor, equipment, materials, subcontractors, crew’s productivity, and other costs for internal review and proposal submission using internal processes and client provided bid forms.

Upon award of jobs, develop preliminary bill of materials and project budgets based on the estimates for the job, and interact with the jobsite personnel to track and report job progress, comparing actual performance to estimated performance. This will also include project changes to original scope.

Generate estimates and the respective budget and tracking updates for change orders and estimate variances generated during job construction phase.

Provide feedback to assist with the improvement of the department operations, including cost/time saving ideas.

Additional duties as assigned by the Estimating Manager.

Participate in professional development or educational programs as requested or required.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS: Must be able to follow prescribed office policies and procedures and obey all safety rules. Maintain confidentiality of sensitive and confidential information. Report to work in a neat and well-groomed appearance to ensure a good corporate image and represent the Company in a professional manner at all times. Able to react to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned. Must possess a valid driver's license.

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree or Associate’s Degree in Math Sciences or Construction Management, or 3 years Stebbins’ experience.

SKILLS/EXPERIENCE: Strong math background; computer literate; able to read blue prints and interpret drawings; familiar with general estimating procedures; accuracy; estimating; ability to make decisions according to policies and procedures; able to maintain working relationships with other employees, vendors, and customers; ability to understand and carry out instructions; ability to handle responsibility with limited supervision; strong interpersonal communications and organizational skills.

EQUIPMENT USED: Personal computer, telephone, fax, copier, personal protective equipment, jobsite equipment, and safety equipment.

ON-JOB TRAINING: 12-24 Months (Initial training may involve several week-long field visits to our active construction sites.)

WORKING CONDITIONS: An office environment and occasional overnight travel to a construction jobsite environment which could include exposure to hot/cold weather, noise, dust, fumes, chemicals, and other construction site hazards. There is contact with the entire office and field staff and with the general public.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATION: None

JOB DEMANDS: The position requires being able to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time. Also required is the ability to move about both inside an office environment in order to access files, computers, and office machinery. Frequent communication is necessary with other staff and customers to relay accurate and timely information. Required to discern potential safety situations. Occasionally needs to ascend/descend stairs. Presentations are necessary along with meeting deadlines. Overtime may be required. Personal protective equipment must be used as required.

ACCOUNTABILITIES: Responsible for timely and accurate completion of all assigned duties.
