The Department of Parks Recreation & Community Facilities is seeking two highly qualified candidates to fill the position of Equipment Operator Senior in the Cemeteries Division. The incumbent is responsible for operating heavy equipment and managing various tasks associated with burials and other cemetery maintenance.

Duties include but are not limited to


Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Using a backhoe to open and close grave sites and navigate headstones
  • Loading vaults onto trucks for transport to grave sites
  • Moving monuments using the backhoe with hoist & straps
  • Taking funeral orders and researching records as assigned in the absence of the Labor Crew Chief or Cemetery Administrator
  • Preparing for funerals by setting up tents, chairs, artificial grass, lowering device and additional supplemental equipment as needed
  • Mowing the grass using a farm tractor with mowing deck and riding mowers;
  • Using a weed eater when assigned to do so
  • Operating trucks with snow plows
  • Maintaining equipment records and reports
  • Performing miscellaneous grounds maintenance task as assigned

Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Considerable knowledge in commercial lawn equipment and commercial vehicles, high tension rigging systems and hosting mechanisms. Demonstrated skills in insuring vehicles are in good working order, maintaining equipment and machinery, reading work orders, blueprints, maps, route lists, etc., operating vehicles and machines such as light and heavy duty trucks, tandem trucks, bucket and boom trucks, etc. Demonstrated ability to solve problems, self-motivate and manage time effectively.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Two years of experience at the Equipment Operator level and successfully completing training on the types of equipment that is used at this level of assignment
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification


LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • A valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License
  • A valid Commonwealth of Virginia Commercial Driver's License with proper endorsements in accordance with Department of Motor Vehicle regulations
