Job Summary: This position is responsible for maintaining Galveston Island Beaches. The employee must have a strong work ethic, a willingness to work in all weather conditions and must be willing to work with a professional team. The employee must demonstrate good judgment, tact and problem-solving skills and be able to effectively communicate with co-workers and supervisors, citizens and tourists. This position is physically demanding and requires a great deal of physical stamina. This position requires the operation of heavy equipment for the purpose of cleaning Galveston's beaches. Examples of equipment used includes: refuse trucks, front end loaders, dozers, motor graders, back hoes, beach rake machine and tractors with attachments.

Minimal Qualifications:

  • No formal education requirements
  • Must be skilled in operating heavy machinery to include forklifts, sweepers, skid steers, wheel loaders, maintainers, tractors, bobcats, etc.
  • Skilled at driving a ton truck (with or without manual transmission)
  • Holds valid, current CDL (Commercial Driver's License)
  • Must be able to drive vehicles under adverse weather conditions
  • Must have ability to perform physically demanding manual labor
  • Performs job duties with minimum direct supervision
  • Effectively completes written paperwork/documents
  • Performs simple math
  • Maintains professional relationships in both the internal work environment with co-workers and external work environment with the public and public agencies.
  • Exhibit professionalism and maintain order in stressful situations
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the public, using tact and professionalism
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to stand and walk for 8 hours a day
  • Punctual, in-person attendance is required for this position
  • Must be at least 18 years of age

Work Schedule:

  • Must be available to work all shifts as assigned, and as needed to meet operational goals
  • Shifts and days worked vary according to operational needs and weather conditions
  • Must be available to work all holidays, weekends and special events
  • During peak summer operations, employee is expected to work six days a week

Essential Job Tasks:

  • Drives and operates Beach Cleaning Operations vehicles and heavy machinery
  • Removes debris from beaches
  • Places and removes seasonal equipment on beachfront
  • Lifts and places equipment on trailers and/or beds of trucks
  • Secures equipment down for travel to warehouse
  • Rakes of beaches and other areas as required
  • Uses hand tools when required for work tasks
  • Completes written department forms
  • Uses a 2-way radio to maintain communication with supervisors
  • Provides labor for Special Events as required
  • Promote good public relations through friendly, helpful, accurate communication with visitors
  • Work closely with the Parks, Beach Patrol and other departments/agencies
  • Fill in for vacancies as needed and during high demand
  • and correcting any issues immediately
  • Demonstrate dependability, teamwork and strong work ethic
  • Assist with special projects for all parks
  • Perform all other duties as assigned

Sensory Requirements:

Have close, clear vision at distance of 20 inches or less.

  • Have distance, clear vision at distance of 20 feet or more.
  • Have color vision to identify and distinguish colors as related to warning lights, color of equipment and glare from sun.
  • Have peripheral vision to observe an area seen up and down or to the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point, i.e. climbing on rocks to pick up trash must be aware of surroundings for safety or driving heavy equipment vehicle must watch pedestrians on the beach.
  • Have depth perception vision to observe three-dimensions and judge distances and spatial relationships.
  • Distinguish sounds at low to high volumes, i.e. warning signals.
  • Distinguish gross pressure perception when wearing gloves and picking up objects.
