CLASSIFICATION SPECIFICATION


CLASSIFICATION TITLE: EQUIPMENT OPERATOR I


PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION

The purpose of this classification is to perform technical tasks in operating trucks to assist in maintaining County roads and drainage systems.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position and are a representative sample. Position assignments may vary. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Operates a truck to load and deliver materials (dirt, gravel, asphalt, etc.) and equipment for roadwork.

Contacts asphalt plant and rock quarry to coordinate delivery of materials; receives and reviews orders for delivery.

Performs daily maintenance checks on equipment and machinery; may clean and wash trucks and equipment.

Maintains proper traffic control at work sites to ensure safety for work crews and the general public.

Completes required paperwork and logs.

Completes duty and incident reports.

Works during inclement weather situations, which may require extended work hours beyond normal work schedule.

May be required to monitor inmate activity on work detail; observes physical condition of inmates; and assists with inmate transfer process.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

Incumbents in this classification may be responsible for supervising inmate crews, requiring successful completion of Basic Correctional Officer Training. Incumbents performing this function may be entitled to additional compensation and participation in other pension plans.

Performs other related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • Equipment safety precautions and procedures
  • Traffic safety and control procedures
  • Emergency repair techniques
  • County roads system and geography; and
  • Inmate supervision requirements (if required to supervise inmates)


Skill in:

  • Operating a dump truck and tractor-trailer
  • Performing daily maintenance checks of assigned equipment; and
  • Using two-way radio and/or other communications equipment

Ability to:

  • Coordinate work projects with staff to assure efficient, safe completion of same;
  • Maintain accurate records; and
  • Communicate using interpersonal skills when interacting with coworkers
  • supervisor, the general public, etc., sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Basic literacy and mathematical skills used in following instructions; communicating with co-workers and the general public; and, performing basic arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).Two years of related work experience operating trucks and/or similar equipment. Must possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License with appropriate endorsements. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license with a Hazardous Materials endorsement. Must be available for on-call work as assigned. Must be able to work extended shifts, as needed, during inclement weather conditions. Must have the ability to readily obtain certification by the Georgia Department of Corrections within a period of six months, if required to supervise inmates.

Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate trucks.

Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. May include counting, recording of counts, and basic measuring.

Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to carry out detailed but routine written or oral instructions. Involves routine work according to clearly prescribed standard practices, with some latitude for independent judgment.

Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment in situations characterized by repetitive or short cycle operations covered by well-established procedures or sequences.

ADA COMPLIANCE

Physical Ability: Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of heavy objects and materials (20-100 pounds).

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals.

Environmental Factors: Tasks may require exposure to such environmental conditions as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, and traffic hazards.
