High-Level Description

  • The Senior Electrical Engineer oversees and manages the electrical and controls design of expansion and maintenance capital projects executed by third party engineering firms to ensure compliance with Company standards and specifications and industry standards and managed to the project budget and schedule. Liason with other Enbridge functional groups within Project Execution, Operations and Shared Services to ensure project and company requirements are achieved and incorporated into the design deliverables.

Specific Accountabilities

  • The Electrical Engineer must have experience in the design of large horsepower (10,000 to 30,000 HP) turbine and electrical motor driven centrifugal compressor stations, and experience in industrial systems and Hazardous Classified Areas meeting NEC requirements and knowledge of the following:

1. Power

  • 120/208 volt systems including lighting panels, lighting, convenience outlets.
  • 480 volt systems including motor controls centers/motor starters, motors, power panels, transformers, auto transfer switches and generators.
  • 4160 volt systems including switchgear, motor starters, synchronous motors, circuit breakers, relaying, metering.
  • Cable and conduit sizing.
  • Starter and overload sizing.
  • Grounding systems.
  • Cathodic protection systems.

2. Controls

  • Allen-Bradley or equivalent PLC base controls systems including Wonderware based operator interface and communication between multiple PLC based systems.
  • Motor controls circuits.
  • Valve actuators electric and pneumatic.
  • PID loop controllers.
  • Emergency Shutdown Systems (ESD).

3. Instrumentation

  • Smart and analog transmitters including Rosemount and Honeywell.
  • Pneumatic gauges.
  • Pressure, differential pressure and temperature transmitters.
  • Level gauges & transmitters.
  • RTDs and thermocouples, thermowells.
  • Flame and gas detector systems.
  • Oversees the development of the project scope, schedule, capital cost estimate, execution planning, risks and supporting information related to assigned facility projects.
  • Ensures that all facilties are designed in accordance with all regulations, applicable industry codes and corporate standards
  • Manages the execution of the design deliverables by a third party engineering firm against the project budget and schedule
  • Reviews and approves design deliverables for example drawings, technical reports and material listing sheets
  • Reviews vendor materials quotations, prepares technical evaluations, and recommends to the supervisor selections based on technical merit along with price and delivery. For example, tubine/compressor packages, equipment vessels, buildings, pipe, valves and fittings
  • Provide technical support during the construction phase and the commissioning phase of the project.
  • Reviews lessons learned from past projects and incorporates recommendations into future designs
  • Provide technical guidance to junior engineers within the team or others based upon technical expertise
  • Support and/or lead department initatives as required
  • Ensures that development project scope definitions comply with all regulatory, environmental, health and safety requirements through effective management and coordination of internal functional groups

  • Oversees the development and/or implementation of technical solutions, ensuring efficient coordination of technical resources and with other internal and external stakeholders.

  • Project Manager – Weekly interaction to provide updated status on progress, cost, schedule, and risk.
  • Supervisor/Manager, Facilities Project Engineering – Daily to weekly interaction to provide project status update.
  • External Engineering Firm – Daily interaction to provide oversight on project design activities.
  • Operations – Weekly interaction to provide project status update and seek guidance on required design features.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering
  • 7 years of progressively responsible experience in engineering and project management

Preferred:

  • Professional Engineer designation
  • Demonstrated ability to be innovative, initiate and manage change.
  • Capable of working independently, managing multiple projects and prioritizing tasks accordingly
  • Ability to resolve complex issues based on depth and breadth of technical and business knowledge
  • Awareness of interrelationships with other stakeholders both internal and external to the project team
  • Effectively communicate technical issues and impacts to other technical and non-technical staff

Working Conditions

  • Stress levels can be above normal as project work is deadline oriented, highly visible and numerous activities are conducted concurrently
  • Overnight business trips to the field may be required, usually requires Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).Ensure that all compressor station and metering facilities are designed in accordance with all regulations, applicable industry codes and corporate standards.

Define the scope, schedule, and budget for the design and materials for compressor station and metering facility projects.

Manage the execution of the design deliverables by a third-party engineering firm against the project budget and schedule. Review and approve design deliverables, for example drawings, technical reports and material listing sheets.

Participate in design review meeting with engineering firm, Project Manager, Operations, and Construction personnel to discuss the scope, design, and expected performance as well as work out constructability issues.

Review vendor materials quotations, prepares technical evaluations, and recommends selections based on technical merit along with price and delivery. For example: gas compression equipment, vessels, buildings, generators, pipe, valves and fittings.

Review lessons learned from past projects and incorporate recommendations into future designs. Actively identify and communicate new lessons learned and quality incidents for assigned projects. Support department initiatives as required.

Requirements: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Civil, or other related Engineering field. 7+ years of Engineering experience. Strong written and verbal communication skills. A valid driver’s license, which will be verified with a motor vehicle check prior to hire. Work independently, managing multiple projects and prioritizing tasks accordingly. Problem solving through use of standards, modification of standards and/or previous experience. Effectively communicate technical issues and impacts to other technical and non-technical staff.

The following are considered assets: 7 – 10 years of natural gas design experience for compressor station and metering facilities. Knowledgeable and understand CFR 192 and other relevant codes. Time sensitive deliverables. Work requires strong computer skills typically using Microsoft Office applications.

Physical Requirements include but are not limited to: Grasping, kneeling, light – moderate lifting (objects up to 20 pounds), reaching above shoulder, repetitive motion, typing, sitting, standing, visual requirement (able to see screens, detect color coding, read fine print), hearing requirement and the ability to sit at a computer for long periods of time.

Working Conditions: 80% of work is office-based working with multiple project teams. 20% of time is in the field scoping projects or supporting procurement, construction, and
commissioning activities.
