Director of Analytics Job at Moderna Therapeutics
The Role:
Moderna is working to develop first-in-class messenger RNA (mRNA) based medicines. We are seeking a highly skilled, experienced, and motivated Director to lead our Sequencing Center of Excellence (Seq CoE) team in Norwood, MA. The team is responsible to support nucleic acid sequencing for pre-clinical through late-stage programs.
In this role, the candidate will lead building and expanding a high-throughput sequencing center that leverages automation, robotics, and digital infrastructure to support Moderna’s growing portfolio needs. A successful candidate will have detailed knowledge of varying sequencing technologies (e.g. Sanger, Illumina, Oxford Nanopore, Pacific Biosciences) and associated molecular biology techniques with the ability to influence selection of the right technology for the right application. The candidate will manage day-to-day activities of the Seq CoE and should bring operational excellence mindsets to focus the team on quality, throughput, data integrity, and customer engagement. They will also contribute to build a company-wide sequencing strategic vision across many cross-functional interfaces (e.g. platform research, bioinformatics, process development, analytical development, automation development, and digital/IX teams). The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to quickly master new processes, identify creative solutions, and communicate effectively with stakeholders at varying levels. The candidate should also have a high degree of confidence and experience leading a team.

Here’s What You’ll Do:
Lead Moderna’s sequencing center of excellence responsible for high throughput DNA and RNA sequencing, establishing company-wide strategic vision, and method / operational optimization.
Build out the Seq CoE’s sequencing capability via leadership endorsement of capital requests and hiring new talent
Manage and mentor a growing team of 8 to 12 scientists with varying levels of experience
Lead day-to-day operations, supporting both GLP process development and GMP production activities
Identify, prioritize, and execute operational excellence initiatives to increase capacity, improve efficiency, and decrease costs
Develop stakeholder alignment to define, track, and communicate technical development sequencing strategy, technology roadmap, project parameters/milestones, key deliverables, and KPIs as each relates to the business
Accountable for resource management, including making recommendations and decisions regarding operational strategies to meet customer demand
Ensure safety, compliance, and data integrity are prioritized in routine operations and the design, delivery, and maintenance of all projects and operational activities.
Work quickly, assess fluid situations, recognize key variables, analyze complex situations, and make quality judgements in high throughput manufacturing environment
Drive a culture of continuous improvement and quality, always looking for ways to reduce cost and timelines, while maintaining the highest level of quality
Develop and foster strong, collaborative relationships with key stakeholders within Moderna
Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table:
Degree in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Molecular Biology, Chemical/Biomedical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biochemistry, or related technical discipline
Minimum of 10 years (PhD) or 15 years (BS) industry experience in biopharmaceutical development and project management/integration
Proven technical and strategic expertise in all aspects of sequencing, especially NGS technologies
Passionate about the technologies, as well as identifying fit-for-purpose solutions for both small and large problem statements
Strong leadership skills interacting with peers and stakeholders, with emphasis on relationship development, to balance functional priorities and stakeholder expectations
Experience building and leading larger, multi-layered, and multi-disciplinary teams which includes resource planning, staff development, and talent/performance management
A mix of operations and development experience is ideal, but not required.
Demonstrated success in data driven approaches for deploying operational and process improvements
Skilled at synthesizing and communicating complex concepts and performance data to audiences ranging from entry-level employees to senior executives
Ability to constantly manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
A balance of independence and ability to maintain leadership engagement
