Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Job Function)

Provide effective management and oversight of market risk, credit risk, liquidity risk and accounting activities associated with MidAmerican Energy Company’s energy supply management and MidAmerican Energy Services’ unregulated retail services business activities. Monitor operations and ensure compliance with company financial risk management program requirements and derivative accounting policies and procedures, including managing credit risk associated with energy trading, competitive retail and other company business initiatives. Assist in development of business platform hedging plans, evaluate accounting for such plans and monitor activities relating to approved plans. Oversee program planning and management, including development of risk and accounting policies and procedures, including identification, design and implementation of process improvements. Provide leadership and vision in directing risk mitigation activities that support business strategy implementation and execution to the satisfaction of customers, regulators, shareholders and management.

Directs settlement of derivative instruments, physical commodities of gas, electricity, coal, lime, fuel oil, renewable energy certificates, SO2 allowances and ensures compliance with policies, procedures and internal controls. This position also ensures accurate accounting for financial reporting, regulatory reporting and rate recovery.


Typical Duties

Provide effective management and oversight of market risk, credit risk and liquidity risk and accounting activities associated with MidAmerican Energy Company’s energy supply management and MidAmerican Energy Services’ unregulated retail services business activities by providing timely and accurate information, initiating appropriate actions and coordinating with other BHE business platforms when necessary to mitigate exposures and minimize potential losses. Monitor operations and ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements and company financial accounting and risk management requirements. Ensure compliance with internal controls, including those related to the company's electricity, natural gas, fuel and environmental emissions transactions. Review and coordinate approval of new instruments, products, structured products and strategies through the risk oversight committee. Conduct quarterly risk oversight committee meetings; present relevant information and ensure that key issues are being addressed. Provide risk management training as specified in the risk management policy and develop policies and procedures to properly manage the approval and settlement of all gas commodity, transportation, storage, electricity, transmission, coal, lime, fuel oil, SO2 allowances, renewable energy certificates and financial derivatives.

Aggressively monitor credit exposures, initiate timely action to mitigate exposures as appropriate and ensure that periodic credit reviews are completed in accordance with applicable policies and procedures. Maintain adequate contractual documentation for energy supply management and MidAmerican Energy Services’ wholesale counterparties by overseeing timely negotiation of EEI, NAESB and ISDA agreements as needed.

Manages gas, electricity and financial process to confirm, identify and resolve discrepancies with customers. Directs tracking and reconciliation of imbalances with interstate pipelines and third party suppliers and provides cost of gas calculations for monthly and final PGA estimates. This position manages the revenue and payable invoice process to ensure accuracy and netting outstanding accounts receivable and payable balances according to existing contracts.

Oversee program planning and management, including development of policy and procedures to comply with accounting and other authoritative guidance on accounting for derivatives and energy related transactions, and identifying, designing and implementing process improvements

Perform leadership activities necessary for the effective management of the department, including employee safety, selection, counseling, motivation and development; salary and budget administration; organization goals and objectives; and planning, organizing, integrating, measuring and reporting the work performed in the department


Qualifications


Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or business administration

A MBA or advanced degree is strongly preferred

CFA®, FRM® or similar professional designation a plus

At least 10 years of related experience, including eight years supervisory/management responsibilities

Demonstration of advanced technical knowledge, and an understanding of the company's business processes

Thorough understanding of energy trading concepts and strategies, derivatives instruments derivative accounting and contracts

Demonstrated superior written and oral communicate skills, including presentation skills

Demonstrated interpersonal and leadership abilities to communicate complex information accurately and understandably; including superior analytical, problem solving and negotiating skills to influence others in order to persuade, sell and lead opinion on complex information with diverse audiences

Demonstrated advanced project management skills; ability to prioritize and handle multiple issues and projects concurrently
