Notice is hereby given that Huerfano County Sheriff's Department is accepting applications for the position of Detention Officer for the Huerfano County Jail. This is a full-time position eligible for County benefit plans. The starting salary is $33,000. Qualified candidates must be 21 years of age, have a High School Diploma or GED. A mandatory background check and pre-employment drug screen will be required. Shift work, holidays, and weekends may be part of your regular schedule.

JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Detention Officer
FLSA: Non-Exempt
DEPT: Jail
REPORTS TO: Jail Administrator/Sheriff
JOB SUMMARY:
To ensure the safety and security of the jail, inmates, and the public. Provide individual assistance and services to inmates and the public. Ensure the mental and physical condition of the inmates is maintained at an acceptable level.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Ensure the safety and security of inmates, staff, visitors, and the public.
Perform physical booking of inmates. Directly or indirectly supervises inmate activities within the jail, library, recreational areas, booking area, and kitchen/ laundry area.
Conducts cell area, property, and person searches. Performs inmate headcounts. Supervises the preparation and delivery of meals to inmates. Consistently and effectively enforces jail rules regulating inmate conduct through verbal counseling, incident reports, and inmate discipline. Continuously observes inmates, directly and indirectly, to detect, deter, or prevent self-destructive or criminal behaviors including but not limited to suicide, escape, assault, theft, criminal mischief, extortion, sexual activity, and introduction of contraband.
Escorts inmates to and from the court and medical clinics when necessary.
Observes inmates detect and refer medical or emergency mental health conditions to professional medical personnel and facilitate medical and or mental health treatment.
Allows only authorized entry and exit of secure jail perimeter and areas within the jail facility daily, in order to maintain safety and security of the County Jail. Coordinates the use of prisoner trustees for work within and outside the jail. Ensures the cleanliness of both housing and common areas of the jail. Provides receptionist and telephone answering duties outside of normal Sheriff’s office operating hours.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of law enforcement and operations. Must be 21 years of age or older at the time of employment. Must possess a Colorado Driver’s License with a good driving record and no current suspensions, revocation, or license denials. Must pass a thorough background examination. A felony conviction or any other criminal arrest may be grounds for dismissal solely at the determination of the Sheriff. Must be able to maintain departmental proficiency standards on various tools including but not limited to control room equipment.
TRAINING AND/OR EDUCATION:
Must have a high school diploma or GED. Any acceptable combination of education, training, and experience that provides the above knowledge, abilities, and skills that the County deems acceptable.
Experience as a Correctional Officer in other environments is suggested but not mandatory.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
May be required to stand or sit for long periods of time. Must possess sufficient physical strength to overcome and restrain a combative and or resistive subject. Typical positions require workers to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, climb stairs, bend, reach, hold, grasp, and turn objects. Use fingers to operate computer or typewriter keyboards and telephones. The work requires the ability to speak normally and to use normal or aided vision or hearing.
UNUSUAL DEMANDS:
Work is subject to frequent interruptions and inflexible deadlines and varied work schedules.
