WIC Degreed Nutritionist

1 of 2 positions are already filled. The West Oakland Health Council is seeking one full time empathetic, culturally competent WIC Degreed Nutritionist at each of its East and West Oakland WIC sites. We offer a secure, collaborative clinic environment where patient care and outcomes are the #1 priority. These positions are full time 40 hrs. / week, benefitted, Monday through Friday, with no nights or weekends. We offer a competitive, negotiable package, based on experience.

SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Director of WIC and the Registered Dietitian, the WIC Degreed Nutritionist may provide services to participants with any level of nutrition need. The Degreed Nutritionist will perform nutritional screening and counseling, as well as execute the fundamentals and participate proudly in the running of the WIC program.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:

To be conducted in accordance with the Policies and Procedures of West Oakland Health Council and California Department of Public Health (CDPH) WIC:

  • Maintains competence in all aspects of the WIC Nutrition Assistant Training Manual.
  • Performs nutrition assessment, educates participants, and documents nutrition education sessions
  • Provides nutrition intervention for participants as authorized or cosigned by the Local Agency Registered Dietitian.
  • Plots and interprets anthropometrics data on growth grids or prenatal gain grid
  • Records and interprets results for hematocrit / hemoglobin / lead of participant
  • Assists in development and evaluation of education materials
  • Determines eligibility of applicants for WIC program benefits according to policy.
  • Performs certification and recertification of participants using the WIC management information system, WIC-WISE.
  • Provides breastfeeding education and assistance to participants after completing a minimum of 20 hours of breastfeeding training
  • Refers participants to RD, IBCLC, or other professional staff as appropriate.
  • Competently fulfills, through self-designation or assignment, the following WIC designated coordinator roles for which they qualify as dictated under WIC program policies:
    • Nutrition Education Coordinator
    • Breastfeeding Coordinator
    • Local Vendor Liaison
    • Farmers Market Nutrition Program
    • Outreach Coordinator
    • Cardstock Coordinator
  • Competently fulfills, through self-designation or assignment, the following WIC training coordinator roles:
    • Training Coordinator
    • Civil Rights Coordinator
    • Fraud/Abuse Coordinator
    • National Voter Registration Coordinator
    • Other Training Coordinator Roles, as needed
  • To successfully complete 7 hours of CDPH/WIC-approved Breastfeeding training every year.
  • To successfully complete 50 continuing education units every 5 years, equivalent to those allowable for a Registered Dietitian or Dietetic Technician, Registered.
  • Attends work regularly and punctually; is readily accessible during work hours to peers; limits absences from own duty stations and limits visits and activities which distract others from their performance of duties
  • Works cooperatively with immediate supervisor, with department members, and with other council staff persons, as required.
  • Treats all staff/patients/clients/visitors with respect and courtesy.
  • Remains competent in skills required for position.
  • During the initial thirty (30) days of employment, becomes and remains knowledgeable about, and in compliance with, the Councils and Department policies and procedures in the following areas:
    • Patients rights and responsibilities.
    • Professional and business ethics.
    • Continuous quality improvement.
    • Safety and security of person and property.
    • Infection control.
    • Hazardous materials and waste.
    • Life safety and emergency preparedness.
  • Maintains a working knowledge about, and in continued compliance with, all of those areas listed under item (4) throughout your employment with the Council.
  • Attends general staff meetings and participates in quality improvement projects.
  • Performs all duties and services in full compliance with West Oakland Health Councils service excellence standards.
  • Performs other related duties as may be assigned by the Director of Operations, and/or another designee.

  • Environmental and Health Hazards: Frequent exposure to communicable diseases and other conditions common to a clinic environment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bilingual in English/Spanish OR English/Arabic strongly preferred.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelors degree in a nutrition-related field, required.
    • Examples are as follows: Public Health Nutrition, Nutrition, Dietetics, Nutrition Science, Food and Nutrition, Food Science, Nutrition and Health, Community Nutrition, Home Economics with Nutrition Emphasis
  • Entry-level knowledge of nutrients / foods as well as familiarity of life cycle nutritional needs (pregnancy, breastfeeding, infancy, and children).
  • Previous experience working with the WIC program and knowledge of WIC policies and procedures, preferred.
  • Prerequisite entry level experience, answering phone, making appointments.
