The Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, who reports directly to the Vice President of Academic Affairs, is responsible for leading over 70 faculty and staff. The school, with an annual budget of over $5 million dollars, includes eight departments (Agriculture and Veterinary Technology, English and Humanities, Individual Studies, Mathematics and Physics, Physical and Life Sciences, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Nursing, and Allied Health) offering 30 programs at the certificate, associates, and bachelor's degree level. The Dean meets regularly with faculty and department chairs as a group and individually and represents the school on the President's Council, Dean's Council and Academic Affairs Collaboration Team.
The Dean:
- Demonstrates strong leadership skills and facilitates implementation of the strategic plan, aligning school goals and mission with institutional priorities.
- Is responsible for external partnership development, external fund raising and grant writing in coordination with the office of Institutional Research, Planning and Effectiveness.
- Embodies Alfred State's core values and is committed to creating an environment where Alfred State principles of community are the model for student and faculty interaction.
- Provides leadership for the recruitment, development and retention of the faculty and staff and strengthens our culture of excellence in teaching and learning.
- Leads development for the recruitment and retention plans and implementation of the plans for students in the school.
- Guides and supports departments as they develop and expand associate and baccalaureate programs.
- Expands and improves the school's technological facilities.
- Represents the school within SUNY and with regional and national accrediting agencies.
- Promotes the development and implementation of the college's general education curriculum consistent with SUNY and MSCHE Guidelines.
- Works with departments outside of the school to coordinate the integration of liberal arts into technology-based programs.
- Evaluates non-tenured faculty and staff.
- Manages fiscal resources of the school including faculty workloads while contributing to discussions relative to the college budget to best serve students.

Job Requirements:
- An earned doctorate degree and at least one graduate degree in a discipline that is represented within the School of Arts and Sciences.
- A distinguished record of teaching with college and university service appropriate for appointment as a tenured full professor in a department within the school.
- At least a five-year record of increasing responsibility and success as a leader and manager in higher education administration, with preference to those who have served as a successful department chair.
- Demonstrated experience in both budget management and securing external funding.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion
- Excellence in oral, written, and interpersonal communication.
- A record of collaborative leadership working among different disciplines and departments.
- A record of success in student recruitment and retention.
- A record of recruitment and retention faculty and staff and supporting their professional development.
Preferred:

- Demonstrated commitment to shared faculty governance.
- Demonstrated commitment to maintaining a culture of student-centeredness.
