Montana’s Division of Criminal Investigation is a diverse public safety team of professionals who provide a full range of criminal investigative services to state, local, and tribal law enforcement. From homicide investigations to illegal narcotics, criminal records, cybercrime, human trafficking, missing persons, or through training and certifying public safety officers, DCI serves as the hub in providing critical law enforcement support. Our diverse customer base includes protecting our vulnerable population, managing the sexual and violent offender registry, serving as the hub of communication for criminal justice information networks and the storage of criminal records, conducting arson investigations, as well as providing intelligence analysis support for local law enforcement. Job Overview:

The Crime Analyst positions serve to improve decision making and proactive law enforcement statewide by collecting, analyzing, storing and disseminating criminal intelligence information that is associated with identifiable individuals, groups, organizations or events that are known or suspected to relate to the investigation of major criminal conspiracies, projections about criminal operations or the production of estimates regarding future major criminal activities (MCA 44-5-103).

Job Overview: The analyst will analyze data and intelligence information in direct support of official operations for federal, state, tribal or local law enforcement agencies or criminal information networks, the analyst will collect sensitive and non-sensitive information from a wide variety of sources such as law enforcement, other criminal justice agency contacts and private citizens; databases, original source documents; open media sources; business, commercial and licensing records; administrative documents, summaries and statistical reviews.

The analyst will create strategic and tactical criminal intelligence information that improves operational effectiveness for criminal justice agencies. This will be done by applying accepted law enforcement intelligence practices that are routinely used to modify field collections through a process of evaluation, collation, analysis, preservation and dissemination. This process starts and ends with officials and staff from authorized agencies.

This employee will project trends, make forecasts, prepare assigned or self-generated surveys, reports, memos, correspondence, bulletins, articles, briefings, and reference materials; produce visual graphics, including courtroom presentations and other detailed graphical presentations; and make contributions to professional publications.

This employee will promote and maintain liaison with other law enforcement, governmental, public and private agencies to establish and maintain effective, efficient and open lines of communication including but not limited to, face to face meetings, site visits and telephone contacts. The incumbent will attend regional meetings, conferences, seminars and training sessions; exchange crime related information; share resources and contacts; consult with various agencies to obtain information or gain referrals; and receive and prioritize requests for research or case assistance.

The analyst will participate in multi-agency task force investigations, both in state and out-of-state, to provide intelligence research assistance that meets the objectives of the Division of Criminal Investigation and other law enforcement / criminal justice agencies. This includes responding to call-out requests, assisting with investigative and prosecutorial case support, briefing criminal justice agencies and recording and collating information collected as a result of recent arrests or prosecutions.

The analyst will represent the Montana Department of Justice and the Division of Criminal Investigation during jointly sponsored work-related projects and meetings; participate in the development of Section goals, objectives and performance measures designed to improve operational effectiveness; and attend regional coordination and planning meetings.

The analyst will complete administrative documents such as travel requests and claims; assist in training and orienting new employees in Section procedures, including outside agency personnel; research and coordinate special projects; and complete other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree in any field that includes research and analysis of data, including but not limited to criminal justice, law, social science, history, mathematics, or computer science.
  • Two years of professional experience in governmental intelligence analysis with a criminal justice, military, or governmental intelligence agency, criminal intelligence network organization, or business, financial or academic institution that compiles data, analyzes findings and writes reports that indicate relationships between various parties.
  • This agency will accept alternative methods of obtaining necessary qualifications. Once the two-year professional work experience requirement has been met, additional direct work experience in intelligence analysis may be substituted for required education and training on a year for year basis.
  • Other combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • Within 12 months of hire, the incumbent will start the process to obtain a Secret clearance issued by the federal government. If the incumbent is unable to obtain this clearance, employment will be terminated.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of a specialized, extensive (multi-week) training course in intelligence analysis.

Special Instructions:

The Crime Information Bureau is filling two analyst positions within our team. One position will focus on cyber security and cyber intelligence sharing. One position will support drug interdiction and investigations focused on significant criminal activity. The drug analyst position is sponsored by the Montana Highway Patrol.
