Hanover County is looking for an energetic individual to mentor Hanover County Youth. The successful candidate will be partnering with schools to address student engagement and truancy. This full-time position (40 hours/week) requires work beyond normal working hours, to include weekends, holidays, nights and occasional on-call responses.General Description: This is a direct service position. The incumbent provides structured mentoring and individualized academic and social/behavioral support to a defined caseload of youth within a multi-tiered system of support. The incumbent works collaboratively with youth, families, school personnel and community service providers to provide interventions designed to improve engagement with school and the community. Organization: The position reports to the Juvenile Court Services Program Coordinator and supervises no staff. Essential Functions: - Provides coaching, problem solving support, and individualized skill-building interventions to youth during weekly meetings.- Systematically monitors school attendance, behavior, and documents youth engagement in school and the community.- Facilitates youth access to and active participation in school/community-related activities and events.- Communicates regularly with Program Coordinator, school personnel, and community partnerships. - Provides responsive services to assist in addressing crisis and emerging personal, situational and social/behavioral issues for youth.- Conducts home/work/school visits with youth and families to establish relationships built on open communication and trust. - Prepares written reports and documentation as required and needed.- Assists with monitoring other Juvenile Court Services unit programs and weekly activities, as needed.- Performs related work as assigned.Working Conditions: A. Physical Effort• Moderate – Must be able to oversee and control physical activitiesD. Non-exempt Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Must be able to work with at-risk adolescents. Willingness to provide emotional, social and practical support to youth and families. Ability to maintain confidentiality, to follow instructions and to demonstrate sound judgment, required. Must be familiar with crisis intervention and community resources. Ability to interact positively with adolescents and the public, required. Ability to calculate figures and apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Education, Experience and Training: Bachelor’s degree in Human Services or related field or a minimum of two (2) years related experience working with at-risk youth. Any equivalent combination of education, experience and/or training sufficient to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities is acceptable. Special Conditions: • Criminal Records Check, including fingerprinting• Valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver’s License• CANIS (Child Abuse and Neglect Information System ) Records Check• Pre-Employment Drug Screen (State Requirement) and repeated in accordance with State policy thereafter• Twelve-month probationary period• Work Beyond Normal Work Schedule, including weekends, holidays, nights, and on-call responses Revision Date: July 2022
