ABOUT THE ROLE
The Comptroller will be a critical leader on the Finance Team across a network of schools. This role will be responsible for leading and facilitating key aspects of financial management for the Schools, including day-to-day management of financial operations to best serve the schools’ needs. The Comptroller will report to the Chief Executive Officer and will collaborate on matters of planning, financial management, and the overall leadership of LAB.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead and manage the accounting and finance function to enhance processes and procedures;
- Oversee the management of financial transactions, including accounts payable and receivable, banking and payroll functions;
- Manage systems to process procurement and purchasing requests. Processes accounting transactions according to GAAP and reporting standards. Ensures all applicable back-up documentation is present and organized. Maintains quality control, including ensuring that all transactions and accounting activities are properly documented;
- Prepares and analyzes account statements and reconciliations, and elevates observations about variance from goals;
- Ensures financial obligations are paid in a timely and accurate manner;
- Guides team’s implementation of financial tools and systems to improve work efficiency, and provides training on tools and systems. Ensures that tools and systems capture all financial information. Coordinates with operations, academics, and human resources staff to ensure proper reporting of financial data;
- Translates reporting requirements into discrete workstreams and coordinates the production of reports, ensuring information is conveyed in a meaningful and accurate way and in accordance with reporting requirements. Prepares analysis and reviews for quality, accuracy, and timeliness, and evaluates observations, trends, and variances for validity and potential impact;
- Assist with the annual budget process and provide budget to actual performance results to the CEO, Administrative team and the Finance Committee of the Board of Trustees;
- Maintain and update fiscal calendar for all reporting deadlines including, but not limited to, annual audit, tax reporting, initiation of annual budget process and monthly close dates;
- Maintain comprehensive understanding and ensure compliance with all New York State Education Department reporting requirements;
- Deliver timely reports to the school leaders, Finance Committee of the Board of Trustees, Board of Trustees and other agencies (as deemed necessary);
- Manage and execute year-end audits and work with external auditor to ensure clean financial audits with an unmodified opinion;
- Establish and maintain fund accounting system that accurately tracks all funds, grants and programs; and
- Establish and maintain sound financial policies, procedures, systems and controls for LAB.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree required with an emphasis on financial management or accounting.
- Fully experienced in operational finance/accounting as well as strategic capital structure/financing decisions;
- Demonstrated track record of success in qualitative analyses and financial modeling;
- Strong interpersonal skills, ability to communicate and manage well at all levels of the organization; ability to manage and build consensus within cross-functional and multi-disciplinary teams;
- Experience with charter or charter-like schools, nonprofit strategy, nonprofit consulting, and/or with students in low-income urban environments is preferred, not required;
- Commitment to LAB’s mission and academic objectives; a demonstrated belief that all students, regardless of background and incoming ability, can achieve at high levels
- Willingness to be a team player and support auxiliary projects with the Operations team
- Demonstrated enthusiasm, a “can do” attitude, and a desire to make others successful
- Ability to absorb feedback, engage in self-improvement, and adjust to a dynamic and rapidly changing environment
ABOUT BENEFITS & COMPENSATION:
Brooklyn LAB staff will receive a competitive salary and benefits package that improves over time and is competitive with other New York City charter schools.
The salary for this role is budgeted from $95,000-$115,000, commensurate with experience and expertise.
In addition to competitive salaries, Brooklyn LAB benefits package includes:
