Communicate information on Department activities and initiatives to establish and enhance partnerships with constituents across the state.
Plan, organize, carry out, and measure strategic communications activities, including the production of print materials, news releases, videos, and content for WDFW’s social media and website platforms.

This is an opportunity to coordinate with Department programs and other communications staff to develop communications information and web site content in support of ongoing programs, services, and activities.
In this dynamic role, you will explore social marketing strategies to positively change behaviors and measure effectiveness and adapt tactics accordingly.
You are excited to develop communications tactics designed to encourage consumers to opt for household products, for example, that are safer for the environment to minimize impacts to endangered Southern Resident orcas and Chinook salmon.

Our Communications Specialist,
- Performs writing and editing duties relative to major communication projects.
- Edits copy for a wide variety of work submitted for printing and e-publishing.
- Writes news releases and other written content.
- Develops engaging social media posts and promotions covering a variety of topics, including producing, filming, and editing short informational videos.
- Produces blogs, photography and other media products as needed to support communications initiatives.
- Writes and edits speeches, talking points, fact sheets, and other strategic documents.
- Remains informed of rulemaking; diversity, equity, and inclusion; SEPA; public engagement; contracting, and other best practice processes.
- Participates in work groups to develop practical, cost-effective project plans that ensure timely completion of communications and outreach priorities.
- Coordinates and strategizes with other team members to solve problems or resolve unexpected challenges.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Work Setting, including hazards:
- Primarily a home office or office setting with some days spent in the field under line staff guidance.
- Office hazards include working under fluorescent light, repetitively entering data into computer, looking at computer monitor for long periods of time, sitting or standing for long periods of time.
- Schedule:
- Generally, Monday – Friday, 8:00 – 5:00 PM, with potential for a flexible schedule.
- Travel Requirements:
- Some travel within state to attend public meetings, trainings, or community events.
- Tools and Equipment:
- Standard office equipment, plus video and audio gear.
- Customer Interactions:
- Frequent interactions with the media and public.
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
At least three (3) years of professional experience in the news media, public information, or public relations field.
- Working independently and interacting with the public.
- Using social media, preferably Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram.
- Excellent written communications skills.
- Use of standard office equipment, including a computer and telephone system.
- All Microsoft Office programs, in particular Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
- Bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications, journalism, marketing, public administration, or a related field.
- Familiarity with natural resources, economic development, conservation, and outdoor recreation organizations and issues in Washington.
- Demonstrated proficiency in project management, photography, and videography.
- Experience working with Washington State agencies, local governments, and statewide natural resources associations.
- Bilingual capabilities.
