Job Description

About the role:

Takeda has committed to reaching Value Chain (Scope 3) net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) targets, which will require a substantial transition in data sources and quality to accurately measure, track and report progress to GHG emissions reduction targets, and inform procurement and other business decisions based on impacts to Takeda’s carbon footprint.

This newly created and visible role will be an important member of Takeda's Planet Initiative and will help develop and implement Takeda's strategy for improving the accuracy of GHG accounting and reporting methodology, with a primary focus on Scope 3 emissions.

  • You will lead the execution of the transition of base data and emissions estimations from generic to supplier-specific emission factors
  • You will provide technical expertise related to value chain sustainability accounting and measurement. You will bridge across multiple teams including Procurement, Environmental Sustainability, and Data & Digital, helping the team to meet sustainability reporting and assurance requirements while optimizing the use of data management systems.
  • Successful system transition will require understanding sustainability reporting and accounting, observing the GHG Protocol and other applicable guidelines, and the limitations of existing methodologies and data systems. You will develop and steer new ways to measure value chain GHG emissions to better inform and align our decisions to our net-zero strategy.

How you will contribute:

  • Lead the development of value chain (Scope 3) accounting and reporting methodology and implement required processes to meet internal and external reporting expectations and facilitate achievement of corporate net-zero goals.
  • Understand and apply life cycle assessment (LCA) concepts to improve our Scope 3 accounting methodologies and develop product carbon footprint (PCF) estimates.
  • Develop a roadmap for advancing Takeda's Scope 3 accounting and measurement business processes and associated systems to allow Takeda to track progress toward our Scope 3 net-zero climate goals. Identify high-priority areas and quick-win opportunities to accelerate Scope 3 GHG emissions reduction progress toward targets.
  • Partner with Takeda's Data & Digital team and other team members to define Scope 3 data management system and user requirements and select and implement the best available system.
  • Develop and implement Scope 3 data management processes to facilitate the transition from generic, spend-based accounting to activity-based accounting. Lead the execution and documentation of the transition strategy to ensure conformance with the GHG Protocol, other applicable standards, and assurance requirements. Leverage extended internal and external resources to conduct appropriate pilot studies and gain team agreement on the best methodology choices. Anticipate and mitigate risks associated with data system transitions.
  • Develop a system for documenting and adjusting emission factors for activity-based accounting. Maintain external reporting protocols for all Scope 3 categories that meet external reporting standards at a reasonable assurance level. Assure that educational materials, processes, and documentation are in place for long-term smooth operation and execution of internal and external reporting from the hybrid data/digital tracking and reporting system. Develop and implement a strategy for emission factor management to support Scope 3 needs, as well as, LCA-related tools, assessments, and users. Help develop a system to monitor progress on internal Scope 3 progress and integrate with Scope 3 forecasting and carbon accounting platform
  • Maintain awareness of external system developments and potentially inspiring technology. Help lead connections with external data/systems collaborations and pilots. Stay informed and inform the internal team about emergent scope 3 data reporting and net-zero standards and technologies.
  • Provide support for the scope 3 measurement workstreams and manage cross-stream topics/issues. Work with team members to identify important metrics and opportunities for improving business processes, products, and services
  • Guide the selection and management of systems and back-end data infrastructure for our emissions pipeline. Perform data mining, exploration, and analysis. Create data visualizations, reports, dashboards, and data audits to meet expectations and make progress. Work with Data/Digital partners to design, train, and implement machine learning algorithms, create automated anomaly detection, and use predictive models either directly or together with data/digital partners.
  • Provide input to Procurement to inform the work of identifying and closing data gaps within existing procurement data, systems, and processes relevant to accounting transformation work

Technical/Functional (Line) Expertise

  • Familiarity and experience with GHG accounting and measurement (in particular, Scope 3), and life cycle assessment (LCA) concepts, methodologies, and standards (e.g. GHG Protocol Scope 3 Standard, ISO 14040 and 14044, PCRs, etc.)
  • General project management and execution skills and implementation, optimization, and troubleshooting of interconnected data systems.
  • Familiarity with data management platforms (e.g., SAP, Ariba, Gensuite, and Enablon)
