Summary

The CLAVES Peer Mentors will support the implementation of a program designed to increase persistence toward graduation and offer high engagement experiences that will renew students’ momentum and sense of belonging while reintroducing them to campus support services and resources. The purpose of the program is to help second-year students build relationships of support with students at higher levels who will help them navigate through the different experiences of the second year in college. Peer mentors will provide moral support and share how they coped with the challenges they faced.

This position is FWS-exempt; eligibility for Federal Work Study is not required.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Reporting to the CASA Program Director, mentors will:


  • Attend and co-facilitate weekly CLAVES workshops for the 2021-2022 school year
  • Collect CLAVES workshop polling results and report on data
  • Lead 15 virtual peer reflections with the larger CLAVES sophomore cohort on topics presented by faculty and staff
  • Host virtual check-ins with mentees on a monthly basis and report back to the CASA Program Director
  • Serve as ePortfolio promoters which may include visiting FYE classes and co-facilitating virtual workshops outside the classroom
  • Attend trainings led by the CASA and the CLAVES team
  • Participate in monthly CLAVES team meetings
  • Serve as a liaison and connect mentees to resources, faculty and staff at SXU
  • Participate and support the efforts of the Sophomore Day of Service & Virtual Resource Fair
  • Help coordinate the end-of-the-year Pinning Ceremony
  • Other tasks as requested

Qualifications

  • CLAVES Program ALUMNI in their Junior or Senior year
  • Minimum 2.5 GPA
  • A student who is committed to the success of underserved students
  • Demonstrate a strong desire to help other students succeed, especially peers from minoritized communities and/or identities
  • First- generation student a plus
  • Bilingual preferred
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Description of Hours: 8-10 hours per week
