Summary
The University of Michigan Medical School (UMMS) seeks a nationally recognized, accomplished, and visionary leader to continue to advance the clinical, research, education, and service missions of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R). This leader will build on significant departmental and institutional strengths to amplify national visibility. The new Chair will be a devoted physiatrist who will invest in the Department and champion its work internally and externally.
Michigan Medicine (MM) is home to one of the largest healthcare complexes in Michigan and is comprised of the UM Health System, UMMS, and the Michigan Health Corporation. MM serves the state, nation and world through advanced clinical care, ground-breaking research, and a broad range of biomedical education. UMMS is one of the largest clinical, research, and medical education enterprises in the country and sits within the nation’s top public research university with UMMS receiving $746M in annual awards for FY22. UMMS serves as the academic engine for MM, enrolls 692 medical students, and trains approximately 1,300 residents and fellows in accredited graduate medical education programs. Over 3,850 faculty have appointments in 29 clinical and basic science departments. The 2023 U.S. News & World Report Best Medical Schools rankings place UMMS at 17th in the nation for research and 20th for primary care, with six specialties ranked in the top ten among U.S. medical schools.
The Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation is recognized as a leader in advancing the field with special strength in pediatric rehabilitation, pain management, and spinal cord injury medicine. The department has more than 70 faculty, including over 50 rehabilitation physicians/physiatrists and more than 20 faculty members who have PhDs in rehabilitation psychology, engineering, and rehabilitation sciences. Faculty are nationally known in almost every subspecialty of PM&R. The department has 18 residents and 12 fellows. The department’s mission is to maximize the health, function, and quality of life of individuals with acute and chronic illness and disability in the local and global community throughout their life span.
Reporting to the Dean & Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs and the Executive Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, the PM&R Chair will have a deep dedication to the clinical mission, a proven track record in developing research programs, a demonstrated commitment to education, and significant philanthropic, administrative, and budgetary experience in a matrix-based organization. The Chair will also bring operational knowledge of both inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, business acumen related to strategic planning and business development, a track record of fostering collaboration, and outstanding communication skills. The Chair will be intentional about collaborations with key stakeholders and will find opportunities for alignment. They will promote diversity of thought and will implement practical approaches to enhancing teamwork and individual well-being.
Required Qualifications*
The successful candidate will have an MD or equivalent clinical doctoral degree and have a record commensurate with eligibility for the academic rank of Professor, with or without tenure, depending upon the applicant’s level of experience, or Clinical Professor. The selected candidate will be board-certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation or have acceptable comparable credentials.
