Position Overview
Under direct supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance/repair of Department buildings including construction of campground cabins, pole buildings, picnic shelters, and privies, roofing or reroofing projects, office renovations, and other related tasks; provides support for special projects in the Office of Land Management sites regionally and throughout the state.
Job Responsibilities
1. Under general direction of the Construction Supervisor, performs skilled carpentry work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of state park buildings and newly constructed buildings, floors, trusses, doors, windows, and signs:
- Builds and erects wooden scaffolding and forms for newly constructed out buildings, awnings, and repair work
- Performs maintenance work on buildings and equipment
- Instructs and directs contractors, volunteers, and employees at various work sites in the performance of work tasks
2. Performs skilled carpentry work in reconstructing wooden structures, located on state parks, furniture, tools, fences, and other wooden articles:
- Performs skilled carpentry work in the fabrication of exhibit cases and other wooden units to display interpretive items and materials
- Operates saws, planners, jointers, mortising machines, sanders, drill presses and lathes on millwork for upcoming projects
- Sharpens hand tools and performs maintenance work on all tools and equipment
3. Follows appropriate safety precautions and procedures in the use and handing of tools and equipment at work sites:
- Cleans and secures all tools and equipment to ensure the work area is safe and secured prior to leaving site
4. Develops or utilizes plans in the making of cabinetry work:
- Determines supplies needed to perform carpentry work
- Completes work orders, and requests for expenditures
- Maintains inventory and tool control
- Travels to other parks in various regions throughout the state
5. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Requirements
- Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of high school.
- Requires completion of an approved apprenticeship program to qualify as a journey level carpenter.
Preferred Qualifications
- One (1) year of extensive knowledge of the tools, materials, methods, and standard practices of the trade
- One (1) year of experience in the use of tools and machines of the trade
- One (1) year of experience instructing beginners in the trade
- One (1) year of experience directing unskilled workers
