About Us*
KIPP SoCal Public Schools (KIPP SoCal) is a nonprofit organization that operates tuition-free, open-enrollment, public charter schools focused on preparing students in systemically under-resourced communities in Southern California for choice filled lives. In July 2019, KIPP LA Public Schools and KIPP San Diego Public Schools united to become KIPP SoCal Public Schools to better meet the needs of our students. We currently operate 22 schools, educate approximately 9,800 students and support an additional 5,100 alumni who are attending high school and college.
The Opportunity

- The Authorizer Relations Associate will work alongside another Authorizer Relations Associate on KIPP SoCal’s External Impact Team
- The Authorizer Relations Associate will support KIPP SoCal schools in demonstrating compliance with local, state, and federal education laws
- The Authorizer Relations Associate will play a role in writing and submitting the charter petitions of KIPP SoCal schools
- The Authorizer Relations Associate will be uniquely positioned to recommend public policy changes for KIPP SoCal’s advocacy agenda
Demonstrating Compliance to Authorizers (60%)
- The Authorizer Relations Associate plays a critical role in helping KIPP SoCal schools demonstrate compliance with local, state, and federal laws. Each KIPP SoCal school is overseen by one of four authorizers: the Los Angeles Unified School District, the Los Angeles County Office of Education, the Compton Unified School District, or the San Diego Unified School District. Each authorizer conducts an on-site oversight review at our schools. Each authorizer also requires our schools to submit compliance documents throughout the year. This oversight cycle is an intensive examination of the school’s educational programming, academic performance, governance, organizational management, and fiscal operations. By the end of the year, each authorizer writes an annual report that impacts each school’s case for renewing its charter. The Authorizer Relations Associate spearheads this work by:
- Building trustful and respectful relationships with KIPP SoCal’s authorizers
- Synthesizing oversight guidance from four authorizers into one oversight review project plan for KIPP SoCal stakeholders and each school site
- Answering compliance questions from stakeholders at KIPP SoCal and school sites
- Progress monitoring the collection of documents from KIPP SoCal and school-site stakeholders to demonstrate compliance to authorizers
- Evaluating whether documents provided by KIPP SoCal and school-site stakeholders will adequately demonstrate compliance to authorizers
- Submitting documents to authorizers on behalf of KIPP SoCal and school sites
- Preparing School Leaders and School Business Operations Managers for their authorizer’s oversight review
- Providing on-site support to School Leaders and School Business Operations Managers on the day of their authorizer’s oversight review
- Interfacing with authorizer staff on the day of oversight reviews (e.g., introducing the school-site team, fielding questions, noting feedback, etc.)Summarizing authorizer feedback for stakeholders at KIPP SoCal and school sites
- Relaying authorizer inquiries to KIPP SoCal and school-site stakeholders
- Leveraging the expertise of KIPP SoCal and school-site stakeholders to write responses to authorizer inquiries
- Assisting the Authorizer Relations Manager in writing annual reports for authorizers
Researching, Writing, and Submitting Charter Petitions (20%)
- KIPP SoCal’s charter petitions are contracts that our schools enter with authorizers. Each school’s charter petition lasts for a term of 2–7 years and governs the school’s educational programming, employee qualifications, health and safety procedures, suspension and expulsion procedures, and other day-to-day operations. Charter petitions also analyze trends in academic performance, English Learners’ progress, chronic absenteeism, and suspension rates at KIPP SoCal schools, local school districts, and California. Here’s how the Authorizer Relations Associate will support this work:
- Researching academic performance, chronic absenteeism rates, suspension rates, and English Learner progress at the school level, district level, and state level
- Drafting analysis of academic performance, chronic absenteeism rates, suspension rates, and English Learner progress at the school level, district level, and state level
- Contributing to social, political, economic, and historical research on communities served by KIPP SoCal schools
- Drafting a discussion of each petitioning school’s oversight track record
- Fact-checking research cited in charter petitions
- Copy editing charter petitions
- Gathering and reviewing supporting documentation from KIPP SoCal stakeholders
- Assembling charter petitions and supporting documentation in binders for authorizer review
- Assisting Authorizer Relations Manager in responding to authorizer redlines of charter petitions
Additional Support (20%)
- In addition to compliance and charter petitions, the Authorizer Relations Associate will play a supporting role in:
- Building trustful and respectful relationships with stakeholders at KIPP SoCal and school sites
- Submitting material revisions of charter petitions
- Writing community impact assessments for material revisions
- Responding to unanticipated and ad hoc inquiries from authorizers
- Recommending ways to ensure KIPP SoCal schools stay compliant with local, state, and federal laws
- Working with KIPP SoCal’s operations, academics, human relations, fiscal, data, talent, credentialing, and facilities teams on streamlining internal systems for maintaining compliance
- Highlighting public policy changes that our school communities need to make sure KIPPsters reach their greatest potential
