The Assistant Director of Social Media will manage content and strategy for all of UMass Boston’s top-level social channels — a community of more than 70,000 users across 5+ platforms. This person will be the most senior social media leader on campus, also helping departmental social media managers use the university brand to feature their activities.
We’re looking for a data-driven strategist with an outgoing personality and an intuition for good content. How will you help us increase followers and deepen their connection to UMass Boston? You’ll be working with a fun and energetic team of marketers, designers, communications experts, and a professional photographer. Our division acts more like a startup, testing new ideas and learning from the experience.
Applicants must have 3+ years of full-time social media management experience with a brand or organization. This is not an entry-level position. A big part of the role is building relationships with community members, monitoring the social ecosystem for issues and opportunities, and acting fast.
Please provide a portfolio link or doc featuring your most successful social media posts. You don’t have to be a designer, but you need to know good design when you see it. You’ll need strong writing skills and the ability to resonate with a 17-year-old high school student up to an 80-year-old alum. From quick-turn messaging to month-long campaigns, our division does it all!
Examples of Duties:
- Maintain a master social calendar for the university using Sprout Social, and create a template calendar for post cadence by channel
- Create quick-turn content and in-depth campaigns for Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, and more (mostly organic, occasionally paid ads) — we’re talking posts, stories, and lives
- Be on campus 3+ days a week, especially when major events are taking place
- Collaborate closely with our team of marketers, designers, and communications experts, as well as other departments
- Maintain the university’s social media policy by advising departmental social media managers and approving content plans
- Set metrics and track goals for each campaign with an eye toward improving the ROI of each social channel
- Be able and willing to approach our amazing (but shy) students to ask if they will participate in campaigns
- Manage the university’s top-level social communities, including monitoring of comments and mentions to surface challenges and opportunities
- Contribute to overarching marketing strategy and planning as needed
- Be (healthily) obsessed with UMass Boston’s brand, mission, and community
- Supervise interns and student workers, when applicable
- Other duties as required
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree required. Minimum three years' experience of full-time social media management experience with a brand or organization. Proven ability posting to social channels and tracking engagement metrics at an organizational level. Experience in higher education a plus. Additional Qualifications
- Great writing and storytelling skills
- Broad-ranging proficiency with digital photo and video creation
- Comfortable interviewing students, staff, faculty, and alumni and inspiring user-generated content
- Proficient with organizational use of and segmentation between Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and LinkedIn, among other channels
