Community Options, Inc. is a national non-profit agency providing services to individuals with disabilities in 11 states.

We are Now Hiring an Employment VISTA in Manhattan, NY as part of a project through AmeriCorps VISTA. The Supported Employment Outreach VISTA will focus on the outreach and expansion of the supported employment program including developing new partnerships with employers and schools as well as educating employers on the benefits of hiring individuals with disabilities.

Annual Allowance: $17,552.08

Responsibilities:

  • Meet and interface regularly with Job Coaches/Employment Specialists and Managers to understand the needs, aspirations, and skills of people currently supported in employment; target employer and post-secondary/vocational school outreach with these insights in mind
  • Attend trainings and orientations; shadow a Job Coach/Employment Specialist; conduct site visits. Begin implementation of COBAC action plan.
  • Recruit new COBAC members by establishing a stronger presence in the community. VISTA should attend business networking events, join member coalitions, Chambers of Commerce, etc.
  • Participate in Cupid’s Chase 5K planning, coordinating, and volunteer-recruitment. Develop peer to peer fundraising tools to share with COBAC members. Solicit new partners, vendors, and sponsors for Cupid’s Chase.
  • Outreach to develop new partnerships with employers/diversity and inclusion officers who are amenable to hiring people with disabilities, offering their space for people with disabilities to engage in jobs skills assessments or job sampling, or offering to mentor, interview or otherwise support people with disabilities in employment
  • Educate employers on the benefits of employing people with disabilities, and on how Community Options works with employers to ensure success and retention
  • ·Develop new partnerships with underserved/low-income primary schools and school districts where Community Options can support students with disabilities in employment, career and post-secondary education assessment/ exploration, or paid internships
  • ·Outreach to and develop new partnerships with vocational schools, colleges and universities where primary school students with disabilities can take campus tours, meet with professors or academic advisors for the field in which they are interested, or meet with officers from accessibility/ accommodation offices
  • Outreach to and develop new partnerships with organizations that may refer people with disabilities to Community Options’ supported employment program, such as eviction prevention Conducts quarterly record reviews of consumer files and employee files and enters deficiencies into a tracking database for resolution.

Experience/Skills Required:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • ·Bachelor’s degree is highly preferred (2022 College Grads are strongly encouraged to apply!)
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the US
  • Successful members should have strong written and verbal communication skills, some experience with or knowledge of community outreach, marketing, workforce development, affordable housing, special education or disability services, and good time management/ organizational skills.
