Provide law enforcement and fire/medical services along with airport operations to ensure a safe and properly functioning airport in accordance with local, state, and federal laws and regulations.

Essential Job Functions
  • Respond to aircraft alerts, emergencies, and crashes to extinguish fires, perform rescues, and provide emergency medical services to victims.

  • Conduct foot and vehicle patrols of airport and surrounding areas to identify and deter illegal activity, issue parking tickets and/or traffic violations; and conduct building checks. Enforce City, State, and federal laws, and airport rules and regulations.

  • Operate, inspect, and perform minor maintenance on crash trucks and emergency equipment.

  • Attend training in aircraft rescue, firefighting, emergency medical care, and law
enforcement/policing.

  • Ensure the safe operation of the airfield, including runways, taxiways, and ramps, in accordance with Federal Aviation Administration procedures.

  • Perform traffic and crowd control; monitor restricted areas; and respond to incidents of dangerous individuals.

  • Maintain records and compose reports on incidents and follow-up investigations.

Ancillary Job Functions
  • Complete administrative duties, including answering the telephone and providing customer service.

  • May provide guidance and training to others.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience - An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered
  • High school diploma or equivalent. 60 or more credit hours from an accredited college preferred.

  • Minimum of one year relevant experience in fire, airfield operations or law enforcement preferred.

  • Ability to obtain CPR, P.O.S.T. certification, ARFF, EMT and First Responder certifications. Maintenance of certifications is a requirement for continued employment.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license. Class B CDL preferred.

  • Must successfully complete an annual TSA background check.

  • Must complete and submit a Columbia Police Dept. background questionnaire and pass extensive background investigation; no serious criminal record (determined by nature of violation).

  • Knowledge of crash and fire rescue, firefighting, civilian aviation security, law enforcement, and emergency medical procedures.

  • Knowledge of Federal Aviation regulations.

  • Knowledge of emergency medical practices, procedures, methods, and techniques.

  • Ability to enforce codes, laws, and policies effectively and efficiently.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • High attention to detail.

  • Knowledge of airport operation, safety, and maintenance processes and procedures.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, law enforcement and public safety agencies, and the general public.

  • Must be able to wear a respirator and/or self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).

  • Demonstrated mental/physical health as required by job functions.

  • Demonstrated sound judgment, stress tolerance, decisiveness, leadership, interpersonal insight, and persuasiveness.

  • Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.

Work Environment – Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job
  • May be exposed to wet/humid conditions, inclement outdoor weather, vibration, extreme temperatures, mechanical oils, airborne particles/fumes, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, potentially hazardous bodily fluids, potentially hazardous or cancer-causing agents/chemicals, or very loud noise levels.

  • May be required to work in confined spaces, hazardous traffic conditions, or high/dangerous places.

  • May be required to wear a respirator.

  • Must have clarity of vision, three-dimensional vision, precise hand-eye coordination, and ability to identify and distinguish colors.

  • May be required to lift 100 or more pounds.

  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.

Starting Salary
$43,950 annual/$21.13 per hour plus shift differential of $0.75 per hour for all hours worked between 6:00 pm and 6:00 am.
